    When D&D Was a Toy

There was a time in the early eighties when D&D was big business for toy stores, to the point that industry magazines included articles and info on the game. Last year, while at the Strong Museum, I ran across this in an old issue of Playthings: "Sales of TSR's basic Dungeons & Dragons game...

    D&D: The Board Game?

Dungeon remains a personal favorite, if only because one of my earliest encounters was playing the game at a friend's house. I have three editions in my collection, though I still need to chase down one of the first editions from 1975 . . . for research, of course.

Talking With Steve Jackson About The Fantasy Trip

Steve is making very few changes to the game. I won't say there are zero changes, but he's approaching everything as if "this worked then" and aiming for a final game that's very close to the original. All new artwork; he didn't recover the rights to the art.

Talking With Steve Jackson About The Fantasy Trip

As someone who has had many discussions with Steve about the game for the last two decades, as well as the amount of behind-the-scenes legal work that went into this, I think you're failing to understand the situation. Steve recovered the rights to the game last year, and we announced this back...

Talking With Steve Jackson About The Fantasy Trip

That twisted sense of humor found in Munchkin games existed in the company _long_ before Munchkin was published.

Steve Jackson Games 2012 Stakeholder Report

We're not currently interested in breaking any part of the company off into a separate company or division. It's all Steve Jackson Games, and it's all being run to Steve's standards.

Steve Jackson Games 2012 Stakeholder Report

It's not a matter of "allowing" freelancers to publish adventures. It's just that we haven't received enough good query letters that we're able to publish many adventures. Any freelancer out there who wants to write adventures for GURPS is encouraged to visit: e23: Writing for Us

    Gamma World at PAX?

I didn't get to play, but Andrew (our Munchkin Czar) played and enjoyed it. I did run into Mike Mearls on Sunday and he let me snap pics of some of the contents as we discussed the game: Gamma World Pics | GM Oracle I'm looking forward to (maybe) getting a closer look at the Alliance show early...

D&D 4E Neo-Red Box (4e Starter Set) in my hands!

Thanks for the link! I'm working this weekend, but I hope to get enough time to read through the set and then write up my thoughts. I can say $20 feels like a great price for this set.

Gamma World Box Set Sneak Peak on I09.com

In my opinion cards are infinitely superior to random tables. New cards can be added to a deck a lot easier than a printed table can be expanded. If the GW and D&D cards are truly intended for random results then I think this was the right approach to take.

[Green Ronin] M&M Superlink to Become Super-Powered by M&M

Congrats, Chris! Good to see the game continue to improve and that you're continuing the license (in a new way, but still cool).

    Death of the LGS

Which is exactly why I think game store owners should start thinking of their stores as "mini-conventions" and not just stores. Make the store a fun place to hang out, and earn income on the extras. Hell, a game store could do a lot worse than to grab six or seven classic arcade machines and...

    Death of the LGS

Yes, they will. And that's why game stores need to get heavily into selling drinks and snacks. Also, pencils, paper, dice . . . all of the extras that someone may forget at home.

    Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder 3PP

Do you have any examples of the requirements, Erik? Or is it still too early to release and specific information?

    Death of the LGS

Exactly. RPGs eat a lot of shelf space. Retailers need to understand that space = money, and they need to use their space wisely. Thousands of dollars worth of CCG product can easily fit in a space that holds a few hundred dollars worth of RPG product.

    Death of the LGS

That's a bad reason to do anything when it comes to a business. Personally, I want to spend my days writing new RPG material. I don't, because it was better for my business (and my family) if I slowed things down and took a day job. I still write and sometimes publish new material, but I can...

    Death of the LGS

It's not enough just to ask gamers to support you. You've got to support gamers. You need an open gaming area. You need to sell drinks and snacks. You need a sign that says "No Outside Food or Drinks." You need to stay open late enough that people can take advantage of your open gaming area...
