Payn's Ponderings... Top 10 Essential Albums

I'm from a different generation than many on ENWorld, so my stuff is often much more recent. This is also probably not an accurate list, but it's what is coming to my mind right now: Archipelago, by Hidden Orchestra Lifa, by Heilung The Joy of Motion, by Animals as Leaders AM, by Arctic Monkeys...

Just finished The Wheel of Time books, where is my new RPG?

I just wikipediaed it because I didn't know about it. There's an unhealthy amount of books in that series. Did you read all of them?

D&D 5E (2014) DMs, how do you fudge?

All the other aspects that I'm putting forth are inherently part of games. Especially a game like D&D. Once again, to clear things up, I am not talking about learning concrete knowledge like learning to do math, or learn empathy (even though TTRPGs are also inherently good for that). I am also...

D&D 5E (2014) DMs, how do you fudge?

Nobody said it was about learning a lesson. But you can learn lessons while playing it. And games are probably the best tools we have to teach and learn. There's a whole billion market about it. So the it's just a game thing doesn't hold. I don't know why you're pulling things in such...

D&D 5E (2014) DMs, how do you fudge?

You don't need a teacher to learn lesson. When you put your hand on the open stove and burn yourself when you're young, you learn a lesson. I'm not teaching anything to anyone. But it goes both ways, what you do, allows and forbid at a table, whether it's through explicit or implicit rulings...

D&D General How do players feel about DM fudging?

That's not fudging though. Most DMs I've known will ask some random rolls of players to hide some real perception rolls, or roll some fake rolls to hide the real ones. It does not lead to any of the aforementioned consequences.

D&D General How do players feel about DM fudging?

I mean, if this does happen then, yeah, just cut it short and say "Sorry guys, I think this one was a bit overtuned." But it's not something that should be happening frequently. If you have this situation every other session and have to fudge the rolls not to bore your whole group then that's an...

D&D 5E (2014) DMs, how do you fudge?

I already know all of this. Don't worry, I'm not going to barge in your gaming room to catch you by the wrist if you're about the fudge a roll. I think you should take for granted that I'm obviously speaking all the experience I was apart of or the experiences I was a witness to. But we're...

D&D General How do players feel about DM fudging?

I've definitely been guilty of that in my first years of DMing. I recently watched a video by Questing Beast that very succinctly and elegantly phrased the lesson learned. "DMs should create situations, not plots". It feels bad to create a storyline to be played through and have the group go...

D&D 5E (2014) DMs, how do you fudge?

Because, in most cases, their rolls are a result of a choice. If everything went well, they have some information and decide to act upon it. You translate it and say "give me a something something roll" or "roll to hit". They willingly took a risk, and it succeeded. It's a gamble, but one they...

D&D General Understanding the Design Principles in Early D&D

I started playing with 3E. I read a ton on older editions and old-school D&D. But to be honest, it's all a blur in my head. I know there's some of the games where the races are classes, where some are not. I know some have THAC0, and others not. I know there's ten foot poles, and gold gives XP...

D&D 5E (2014) DMs, how do you fudge?

Obviously, there's dozen of different examples of fudging and we would probably all have different opinions on them. Let's look at other examples. Some from this very thread. One of your players has missed his attack three rounds in a row. He rolls a 15, you look at your notes, that monster...

D&D General How do players feel about DM fudging?

Fudging is very bad. Your players might never know you did it, but it many cases it robs them of their agency. They make some choices, you have to make some rolls and you just outright decide the outcome. It's very unfair and there's very few players I've DMed for that would have appreciated it...

The One Ring 2E - Unhappy with Free League's pre-order and shipping

If it can reassure you, I've always had very adequate shipping speed and customer service from Free League. But as others have mentioned, every non-mega corporation RPG publisher right now is struggling to get their product on shipments. All kickstarters were late, and the last two pre-orders I...

    D&D 5E (2014) (+) What Do YOU Want In D&D Art?

What I want is evocative art. I find most art that's published in the books of big players to be certainly adequate and technically impressive, but to me it has no soul. It almost all looks the same, different artists all brought under a very inoffensive and bland art direction. I want...

Splitting up your ttrpg into free vs $, pdf vs hardcover

Kevin Crawford (Star Without Numbers, Worlds Without Numbers) does a spin on this. You can get the books for free, but there's deluxe editions that have some additional stuff in it. For example, in Worlds Without Numbers you get all the stuff you'd expect from a core rulebook for free. The...

    D&D 5E (2014) Group skill checks

I've seen this suggested often. But I really dislike it. I don't think having people not roll the dies and use their high bonuses is especially rewarding for being good at stealth.

    Who should play Zelensky?

I'm a bit uncomfortable at the idea of casting an actor for a role of someone that's actively defending his country and might be assassinated any day.

    2400 & 24XX: a Beautiful, Three-Page, Micro RPG

Anyway, these art piece from Beeple are absolutely incredible for a game with sci-fi themes. Couldn't ask for better art!
