D&D 5E (2024) Is There A New Sheriff in Town?

I might be wrong for the game now but there was neither dual wirlding weapons nor gish support in the Playtest.

D&D 5E (2024) Is There A New Sheriff in Town?

Yup. DH is a game. It's heavy narrative game but still a game. The issue is it's game is very different. Flavor isn't mechanical and the question is if many D&D fans will like that.. In D&D, a STR heavy weapons user, a DEX dual wielder, and a CHA based bladelock play and feel different. In DH...

D&D 5E (2024) Is There A New Sheriff in Town?

Especially since they will 100% would dive into drama and scandal to do so, Becoming #1, means massively increasing your staff and corporatization. Hell, Being #2 means it as well. Paizo wasn't scandal free for its whole existence. If TTRPG becomes a billion dollar industry, the top 3 will be...

D&D 5E (2024) Is There A New Sheriff in Town?

Frankly Daggerheart feels like "Theater Kid". D&D It's kinda like freeform roleplaying with minor mechanics to determine success and failure. People who like power gaming and dealing with mechanical choice would hate it. People who like their mechanical choices to be heavily entwined with...

D&D 5E (2024) Is There A New Sheriff in Town?

Nope. All of good RPGs thrive under the shadows. Being #1 involves commiting some of the same actions and submitting to the same amount of criticism D&D does in order to get there.

D&D 5E (2024) Could the DnDNext Sorcerer be revived as its own class?

That's only because the community will typically not agree on a focus of what the wizard is to say that their spells are specially different from other spellcasters and decide on what restriction they have. Fantasy dungeon adventure RPGs that decide to split off of the D&D mold typically can...

D&D 5E (2024) Man I hate the organization of the 2024 Monster Manual

I once pondered my own RPG heartbreaker. And in it the monsters would be grouped by their leader. So Zombies, Skeletons, and Ghouls would be under NECROMANCER. But orc berserker, human raider, wild elf, dwarven exile, and halfling cannibal would be under WARLORD.

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

The issue is you are still writing 2 feats that refer the the Spellcasting system and one to the Weapon Mastery system. All which have scale up. I mean. There is a reason why no one printed it and made millions. There's no way to Feat-ize D&D's NeoVancian Spell slot system without angering 50%...

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

Spellcasting (Primal) Ranger Spell List Access Weapon mastery Favored Enemy (Ranger Spell 2/Day) Medium Warrior (med armor and martial weapons) I don't envy someone who has to balance spells with armor training and weapon proficiency

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

The way you're explaining it is that all of these things are separate feats. You'll have to chop those class features up in order to balance them with spellcasting because as we see in the current system magic initiative is a top three origin feat and prolly will be for the entire existence of...

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

It's not complexity. It's quantity. Jack of all Trades classes like Ranger or Bard or Alternative Play classes like Monk or Warlock have many parts in the base kit. Ranger already gets 5 class features in the first 2 levels. Spellcasting Weapon mastery Favored Enemy Deft Explorer Fighting...

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

But then It would be too much content for new players and your sales plummet. Ranger, Warlock, Druid, Monk etc inherently has a lot of parts. Putting more is not great

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

Again doesn't work. A freeform feat system requires design from the core compared to a class system. Think of it this was. You have Beast Companion 1, 2, 3 4 & 5. In a class or subclass system you get each level of Companion in a predetermined level. You might be able to give 3 and 4 both at...

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

That's the point. The benefit of a class based system is you don't have to worry about cherry picking because later features can only be chosen by going deep in the trees. Problem is we learned that this doesn't work as many trap options don't look bad and some Uber combos look weak at first...

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

See. Although a lot of this looks cool and awesome, it shows exactly why it would not work and why modern game design abandoned this line of thinking. It's 00s feat tree design. Feat Trees have the drawbacks that You open up the option that you can accidental screw up your PC by not...

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

I keep saying it and people say I'm crazy. But 1) WOTC just isn't willing to devote that much space to ranger. Ranger notoriously got the least amount of new content back in the day. Now it's suddenly gets its subclasses faster than everyone. 2) The OGL scandal and layoffs sucked up too much...

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

I just think that the chances of success in creating such a ranger is low whereas siloing out Beastmaster and Shaman into their own classes and letting people just make a character of their own design by multiclassing Fighter Rogue Ranger Beastmaster Shaman and Druid in the combination of their...

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

Agreed. And you still want to take Ritual caster to do some magic. The 4e Ranger could kill anything but it stunk at actually finding and getting to the thing needed to be killed. Tools have a direction gameplay loop due to its typical different resource management system. Nah. The...

D&D 5E (2024) Man I hate the organization of the 2024 Monster Manual

The 2024 books seems to be made, designed, and laid out for newish D&D fans who normally don't read rulebooks and don't have a history of being D&D fans.

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

The pet can't really fight. And the Warlock mostly relies on D&D's overgenerous spell system and the most powerful custom Cantrips to make it work. And like I said, it unbalanced the game. The warlock was too abusable and is only slightly less now.
