What prompted the question was that if you choose to cast it on the floor, the opponent(s) gets a save, however if they pass, the Grease is still there. Is there wording to prevent this when used on an item instead?

That's an interesting point, how would you recommend to enhance it? If you based a 2nd level spell upon it for example what would justify it? Just higher DC? A bigger radius? I've not dabbled in spell creation before, sadly.

I think that'll be one of those things that has to be solved in-game. It seems very much down to DM discretion because it is quite a fruity ability, there'd need to be lines drawn.
