What are YOU buying this year?

Sheehs You folks have way too much money to spend on RPGs! Here's my MUST list: 1. Book of Hallowed Might 2. Dungeon Magazine (already paid a subscription) Here's my CONSIDER list: 1. Banewarrens 2. d20 Modern OR Spycraft (only if the Gatchaman d20 campaign is a go) Here's my "if I get paid...

    d20 Gatchaman

Re: Bump? I was on vacation for the last 2 weeks. When all my players get back I'll poll them to see if there's any interest. If there is, I'll develop the concept further. Otherwise, there's this project that Chaosium is talking to me about, and as you well know, a project that pays is higher...

    Level Advancement Rate in 3e

Has this really been important? I've been running my Temple of Elemental Evil conversion, and the characters already advance at the right pace. I don't understand what the issue is. The nicest thing about the 3E experience rules is that by and large they are self-correcting. If the PCs are too...

    Is WOTC/Hasbro mismanaging D&D?

The design decision on which monsters to put in the first monster manual was deliberate. Not only did they have to put in sufficient monsters to cover most CRs, they also made sure that the monster mix included the right number of undead, abberations, humanoids, etc so that certain classes...

Moving to SF/Bay Area -- What's the Gaming Scene Like?

The gaming is fine... ... but the outdoors life in the Bay Area is nothing short of fantastic. In a mere 50 miles, you can go from suburbs to desert to deep redwoods to ocean, along with spectacular views and gorgeous weather. The cycling is heavenly (though given that the local hills are 3000'...

"Going Down The Road To Hell!" Is Announced!

I think that the freeform approach has problems if he uses it as an excuse for not fully fleshing out NPCs. (i.e., not providing default spell selections, magic items, etc) I'm imagining a module that says: Evil Wizard #5: 25th level, 117 xp, Spells: 8/8/8/8/6/6/5/4/4/4/2. Standard spells...

    Level Advancement Rate in 3e

Same here. I played red book D&D, AD&D, and none of my campaigns back then ever cracked 8th level. I left while 2e was getting introduced, and with 3E, I'm actually htting 9th level with my PCs and my temple game. It's great.

    Level Advancement Rate in 3e

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 3e is too fast for me WRONG! CR is determined by playing the four iconic characters against it at a particular level and seeing if it uses 25% of their resources. If you look up the stats for the iconic characters, you'll see that they are NOT optimized. See the...

    Level Advancement Rate in 3e

Re: Re: Re: 3e is too fast for me I can't speak for others here, but for me right now, D&D 3E is still new. I'm like a guy at the steering wheel of the new sports car. And I want to take it for a spin! That means that I want to take the players from 1st all the way to 20th, to see how 3E feels...

    Amazon Sale of DnD Products

The typical LGS The typical LGS is painful to visit. I would never bring my girlfriend there, no more than I would bring her to the local comic store. The store is usually small, drafty, badly swept. The displays are poorly organized, and it's hard to find what you want. The patrons... Well...

    Level Advancement Rate in 3e

Re: Re: 3e is too fast for me That may reflect your experience, but doesn't reflect mine. I've had darn near 50% turnover in players so far in my 1 year long campaign. Given how frequently people move in this country, my guess is that most groups don't last more than 1 year. If the majority of...

"Going Down The Road To Hell!" Is Announced!

I agree. The whole point of a pre-written module is that I don't have to do too much work. (Last night, I was forced to run an adventure COLD because the PCs bailed on the climax of a quest I had setup --- if the adventure hadn't pre-selected spells for the enemy Wizard, I would have been in...

    Level Advancement Rate in 3e

advancement in 3e It hasn't been very fast for my group. We're approaching our one year anniversary, and the highest level character is now approaching 10th level. Part of it is that the Temple of Elemental Evil is very deadly. For awhile, I was killing a PC every 3 sessions or so, and players...

    More lay-offs at WOTC! [Merged]

The kind of money you can save by bringing lunch to work and not eating out only saves about a quarter million to half a million dollars, at best, by the time you're in your 30s. Maybe if you got rich during the dot com era, you can afford to buy D&D ($50 million). But to be honest, if I had...

RPG purchases you know you'll never use

Epic Level Handbook I did buy the Epic Level Handbook (back when it was selling for a riduculously low price at buy.com) thinking that I'd never use it, but given the higher level adventures that have recently been published by Dungeon, I'm very well tempted to give it a try!

Is Now the Time to Send WOTC a Real Message?

Re: shares... Uh, a quick look at Edgar on-line would show that Hasbro has 209,694,630 shares issued. So 10 million shares would be 0.5% of Hasbro's stock. Barely significant, but not really a lot of clout. You have to get to about 5% before the company notices.

RPG purchases you know you'll never use

Ars Magica Shadowrun Call of Cthulhu 4th edition + loads of CoC adventures What was I thinking? I've sworn never to buy another RPG I won't use again. Of course, the Call of Cthulhu 4th edition was what got me to work on the Masks of Nyarlathotep conversion, so that did get used... Albeit...

Best sites online for cheap rpgs - new & used?

places for cheap games Amazon.com and buy.com are consistently lower in price than the alternatives, for new games. For used games, it's a toss up between half.com and eBay.

    40 Dollar Cap?

I believe that's a volume issue. When Amazon gets enough volume on a product, they lower the price. If the product's not selling in high enough volume, they don't lower the price. In that case, nothing stops you from going to the local game store, if the local game store provides better service...
