Where to buy my RPG materials?

price is a big deal I know in the other thread I said I do hope prices go up, but there's a difference: I don't mind giving money to the publisher of the RPGs --- if they do good enough work that I'd like to buy the product they deserve the money. What I don't like to do is to give money to...

    D20 taking over?

open architectures vs. closed architectures d20 is open architecture. Anyone can write for it, anyone can modify it, and anyone can publish for it. All the other systems are closed, or have too little market share for any network externality to take hold. In any market battle between open...

    Predictions of the d20/gaming Industry

video game industry I got my information first hand. I worked at a company at the height of the dot com boom that had relationships with Blizzard, Westwood Studios, iD, and a host of other game companies to put their games on-line. (Some of you may remember the John Carmack Ferrari give-away...

    Predictions of the d20/gaming Industry

a note about the computer game industry The computer game industry pays rather poorly too, just in case those of you in the PnP industry are envying those on the other side of the fence. The typical programmer in the computer game industry gets hired out of high school, gets paid no more than...

    Predictions of the d20/gaming Industry

Why high prices are good The reason I think higher prices are good for the consumer/industry, is that if gamers are forced to buy fewer products, then they'll have to choose what means the most to them. That increased selectivity translates to higher quality in the long run. I think we'd all...

    Predictions of the d20/gaming Industry

RPG prices I have no sympathies for those who complain that higher prices won't let them own multiple campaign settings. If you don't play a campaign, then you're just buying recreational reading material, not a game. I'd much rather own one awesome campaign setting than 6 mediocre ones, so I...

D&D/D20 Poll: What products do you want?

more high level adventures Those are really in short supply! It seems like the number of pre-made adventures you can find drops off dramatically past level 10. In addition, those are really really hard to do well. Encounters that can challenge high level characters are tough to write, and I'd...

How do I make my CoC game SCARY?

Suggestiveness I once had my players come across a dining room table in a haunted house. They shone a flash light on it, and found long grooves lengthwise in the table. As they ran their light along it, they saw blood pooled here and there along the grooves. Finally, as they got to the end of...

ratio of rules to background, what should or is the right balance?

Rules! Definitely rules. If I want settings, I'd read a novel. It strikes me that rules and adventures are the only pieces in an RPG that really need a lot of play testing. Settings don't really need play testing. I get a lot more value out of a play tested rule-set than an unplay-tested...

    Questions for Conversions FAQ

Conversions of deprecated items If a magic item or spell is no longer existent in 3E, are we allowed to substitute new items for it in the conversion?

    CoC or Spycraft?

CoC of course! It's been around longer, there's lots of support available, and now I can get my D&D group to play!

    Conversion Library ~ a rant

He's not the only one My second set of ToEE conversions got lost in the ether too. I'll rework my stuff to conform to the new license before resubmitting, though.

    Point buy vs. rolling

Rolling all the way I've played point buy, and I've played with rolls. For me, it's rolling all the way. The character has more personality that way. And I don't find that some characters having better attributes makes the game all that unbalanced. Good play will always trump poor play.

What's Hot? What are you playing besides 3E

Hm.. Some of you who are on the boards but aren't playing games --- If feel sorry for you. There's no excuse. If you have enough time to respond to this thread, you have enough time to play. I'm in 2 D&D games (both Greyhawk) right now. One I'm DM'ing, the other I'm playing. The other game...

Where to go to get Oriential Names...

Lone Wolf & Cub Pick up a copy of the Lone Wolf and Cub comic and steal all the names. Male, female, high, low, the comic has it all. Esp. suited for Rokugan.

Kill All the Hostages! (We'll bring them back...)

Would a good character do this? I'd say yes. I think of someone like Batman (a CG character if there ever was one), who would never negotiate with a terrorist or give him what he wants. If Raise Dead was an option for Batman, you bet he'd shoot, even risking the hostage's death, and have him...

Too much magic in DnD - lets do something about it !

spells designed concept first Uh... I don't know, but I suspect that all you're talking about is wanting more flavor text in the PH with the spells. Take a look at Relics and Rituals if you want that. I find that flavor text does nothing for me. Your example of bull's strength giving the...

Too much magic in DnD - lets do something about it !

De-empowerting the player LostSoul is misinterpreting me. When I said de-empowering the players (note that I didn't say de-empowering the PCs), I meant that if players don't understand or can't understand how the magic system works, they can't make decisions as to how to use it, when to use...
