A Realization (maybe an epiphany?) about D&D

3e is the best edition of D&D yet. It's versatile, complete, and for a change, is a system that's designed to hang together, rather than a mess of subsystem. Play C&C all if that's what you like, but for me (someone who doesn't have trouble with complexity or arithmetic), 3.5E is awesome!

    New Dungeon Arrived

Good grief, already?! I just received the last issue on Friday! Gosh, this is bad.

What Does it Take to be a D&D DM?

If you run a campaign almost entirely from modules... ... then mostly you need to be detached, know the rules, and be organized! Almost nothing else is necessary. I certainly don't plot my own adventures if I can help it, so none of the writing-related stuff is necessary. But familiarity with...

    Map(s) of Greyhawk?

I'm a Dungeon subscriber, so it was only $14 for me. :-) Given that the LGG isn't much cheaper, I'd say yes. Plus you get all those nice prewritten modules at the same time, many of which are set in Greyhawk!

    Map(s) of Greyhawk?

The one in Dungeon is bigger and better. No question!

How (Often) Do You Use Modules? Revised!

However, all the marketing studies show that the DM buys many more books than players, and spends more money on the game overall. Appealing to the DM is the most important thing when kicking off a new campaign setting, selling a new game, or making the game more popular. By the way, this...

How (Often) Do You Use Modules? Revised!

I ran an entire campaign using nothing but modules! ... and the next campaign I run will also be centered around modules. I've got a full time job and other hobbies, so I don't let D&D take up all my time.

Books pricing themselves out of reach?

RPG books shouldn't be priced for collectors When I think about the folks who complain about RPG book prices, it's mostly people who collect every book that comes out, or try to collect everything in a line or series. If you think about it, most people just can't use all that much material. If...

Using Purchased Adventures: How much work do you do?

I don't mod adventures I just use them. I pick them based on the party's level, current location, and quest. In fact, when I ran a campaign in Greyhawk and there was an adventure in the FR in dungeon, I made the party go to Faerun on a quest. I don't have time to go heavily rework adventures...

    Grimm d20

We started our Grimm d20 game last night and it was fun. (I ran the published adventures) Now I have to figure out what to do for the next 5 sessions... If you ran a Grimm d20 game, what did you have the PCs do?

Take the GM out of the Equation- A 3e design philosophy

3E issues I actually haven't found much issue with the rules themselves. Typically, the rules lawyering that happens on the table are done by two of my players. One of them is so bad at preparation that even when told to he does not show up at a session with his character sheet and what spells...

    Magic Item Creation

That's why my next campaign will use the "Craft points" variant from Unearthed Arcana.

Dungeon 121-Anyone else get it yet?

And I haven't even received Dungeon #120 yet! Ah well. #118 and #119 showed up at the same time.

    XP and leveling progressions compared.

Not too fast... With 7 players starting out and dropping to about 4-5 players after 6th level, it still took 3 years to hit 20th level. I actually think the new levelling is just right. It's OK for folks to go up a level every session until getting to 4th. The low levels are really fragile anyway.

    d20 backlash??

d20 CoC sold out in record time (I remember the announcements made to that effect here on ENWorld). It made WoTC money, and also made a bit of money for Chaosium. You have to remember that Chaosium sat on my Masks d20 conversion for 2 years before pulling the plug and giving me permission to...

Game of Thrones or Black Company description?

But Joe was talking about d20. And The Black Company Campaign Setting does all that well. (Especially when you consider that even the 30th level wizards, etc can be brought down in a surprise round by well-prepared characters)

Is a DM supposed to ensure level appropriate encounters, by the RAW?

I actually think the CR rules for 3E are remarkable! Consider that I ran a campaign completely off published adventures, and none of the authors could have known how my characters were built, and what race/class build my PCs were, but nonetheless the adventures were mostly right on the mark for...

How long have you played D&D?

I wrote 20+ years, but for 10 of those years (the terrible 2e days) I wasn't playing or buying or even in the hobby in any meaningful years. It was 3E that brought me back.

Masks d20 Conversion And of course, I can't resist a plug for my d20 conversion for Masks of Nyarlathotep.

We finished our D&D 3e campaign

To a large extent, that's what kept me going, despite the group breaking up. I really wanted to experience every level of D&D. As a DM, things also got interesting since I kept having to learn new strategies and new things about the game once we got into the 11th level because I never saw games...
