However, her husband and her together went from nothing to 400, and when he died, she took over... and managed to win out against fleets twice her size. Plus, having enough strength to actually win a land war in Asia... that's gotta count for something.

    Seafaring characters

Actually, the most successful pirate in the world was a Asian woman. At the height of her career, she and her son led a fleet of almost 2000 pirate ships. Furthermore, their fleet was VERY lawful, living by an extremely detailed code. Many of the characters representing such pirate heritage...

    Familiars - Advantage or Disadvantage?

Well, if you go by RAW, yes, the arrows cost money. However, in the real world, you could often reuse or repair arrows if you had the skill. Furthermore, if you're in D&D world, an owl flying in the daytime's probably a familiar, so you're probably going to shoot it if you take a moment to...

Rate this Dragon Star homebrew spell...

Heck, if I were running a d20 Future game w/ Urban Arcana thrown in, I'd not hesitate to consider it yoinked. I might set it at spell level 3, though with earliest access to the spell in d20 UrA being at level 8 or so and the primary use of the spell as a 'oh ****, I'm screwed' prevention spell...

What do you think of Robilar's Gambit?

Best way to defeat? Get a humanoid w/ Powerful Build, enlarge them, and turn him into a spiked chain tripper, so the Robilar's user can't really afford to take AoOs since the NPC may get 2-3 for every one the Robilar's user gets, as they'd ALWAYS be within reach, since they'd have the reach of...

d20 Future and Hard SF - some random thoughts

CP2020/Shadowrun do this.. it can get interesting. Cyberinsanity rules can be VERY harsh. If the entire insanity thing comes into play, I suggest avoiding allowing player characters with that as a background, at least in d20. It's likely to get too Frenzied Berserker-ish. Also, when one goes...

Recent Star Wars Saga chat session with designers

I'm looking forward to seeing the condition/HP track system. It both intrigues me and makes me think 'cinematic'. I preferred VP/WP before, now I may have a new favorite HP mechanic. The Talent trees thing: also another great idea IMO. Likewise with reductions in numbers of skills. Always good...

    [Meta-Troll]

Starts a discussion in Low Trollish on the mechanics of dire flails in a quantum universe while stating that they cannot safely exist in a fantasy universe because of Heisenberg certainty, and relates the argument to the nature of dialects of the Troll language, and makes the point that the...

d20 Future and Hard SF - some random thoughts

Yeah, they're the same. You feel heavy, and feel like being pressed down away from the direction of travel. Basically, high G acceleration feels like being on a high-grav planet, because gravity causes acceleration, and our unit of gravitational strength stems from the measurement of that...

d20 Future and Hard SF - some random thoughts

Yeah, one of the advantages of missile weapons is that their acceleration can be so much higher than the equivalent for humans. 12+ Gs are acceptable for missiles, while the same to a human over a significant timeframe is deadly. 1-2 Gs is perhaps the max. Additionally, missiles are great in...

How to create undead/constructs/robots using a point buy system?

I based it off of the fact that racial averages assume 10.5 for ability scores, therefore half are 11s and half are 10s. Since 10's the lower end, we can go from there and work up or down. This way, you're assuming it's equal in power to being of average constitution before racial modifiers.

    [Meta-Troll]

Of course, the meta-munchkin doing the statting would be one who would complain that Pun-Pun isn't overpowered, he's just misunderstood.

d20 Future and Hard SF - some random thoughts

However, let me play the skeptic about Heim theory: The military has repeatedly researched the possiblity of ESP, telekinesis, and other 'magical' or 'psionic' abilities. None of the efforts demonstrated conclusively evidence of any of them. Therefore, military research is not always the best...

How to create undead/constructs/robots using a point buy system?

Officially, robots, golems, and undead do not get con scores, even if sentient.

    OotS #364 Is Up

"It's almost as if they don't even HAVE an obsessive homicidal grudge against their sibling..." This was a great comic. I loved the lines in this one, even more than I normally do.

How to create undead/constructs/robots using a point buy system?

I wouldn't suggest doing that, because it requires first knowing how much a given level of power costs in terms of point buy or player LA. Since we don't yet know that, it's basically unworkable. Now, I would start at a PB equal to normal minus the cost it takes to get Con to 10, Ymdar. Begin...

Metamagic Rod + your own feat

As a tangential question: What happens when you use a normal metamagic rod of maximize on an empowered fireball? Does it do all 150% damage w/o rolling, or the ordinary version?

Level adjustment for awakened wolf as henchman?

Depending on how you deal with their need for unusual items, a Worg w/ class levels in monk can be pretty devastating. A worg monk might actually be a bit stronger on average than a normal monk, since he can pretty much drop minimal points in racial bonus areas, because his bonuses are generally...

    Good familiar names anyone?

I'm thinking calling a male Pseudodragon "Mary Sue" might have a touch of humor associated with it, if the Pseudodragon has a tendency to 'overstate his accomplishments' by more than a small margin on a regular basis. A description of what Mary Sues are. You could also name him after an...

[Problem] Too Many Players: Who Gets to Play?

Why not go the route of "he/she who asked to play and made a confirmed commitment to me first gets to play?" One of the advantages of that route is that in most cases, it won't slight good friends, as it's relatively impartial. It also takes some onus off of you, and gives it back to the...
