D&D General D&D Editions: Anybody Else Feel Like They Don't Fit In?

Because to many people, old vs modern is only within a D&D specific context, and talking about system outside of D&D doesn't register.

It's also my understanding that WotC wants to sell these rules and make revenue off of their existence. Therefore, expressing disinterest for the rules accumulating a certain style that a customer isn't interested in is topical. Advice to just ignore them isn't.

D&D General D&D Assumptions Ain't What They Used To Be

Critical success! Awesome! I actually kind of agree with his point. I wouldn't want stuff laying around that I'd be embarrassed about because I didn't have a problem with it in twenty years either. Nothing in any (official) D&D product from any era or edition would rise to that level for me. The...

Don't worry about it. It's not worth it anyway.

You said you'd read the first several books of Game of Thrones, I thought. It's that not correct? Or have you blocked out the content of them?

So... Repeated underage rape is boring, but slavery, serfdom and racism are a bridge too far and you'd be embarrassed in twenty years for accepting that in your books?!?! This is why alignment discussions never work.

    Nevermind. This'll never work.

How Serious Do You Like Your Gaming?

Puns and Monty Python quotes are overrated as effective humor. I tend to plan deadly serious games that turn somewhat tragicomic when they hit the players, because actively planning humor isn't usually that effective for me. Spontaneous humor is where it's at.

Fair enough. Although I'd argue that the more modern sense is more like George "Rape Rape" Martin or Abercrombie or some other grimdark modern writer. I'm OK with fairly dark stuff, but those guys are all a bridge too far for me. Glen Cook is about as dark as I'm willing to get.

That sword cuts both ways. Just add it or change it because you don't want something in the book is the same thing. It literally isn't any different, except that when you're hall monitoring instead of someone else, you seem to think that's ok, and when you're giving people the least productive...

D&D General D&D Editions: Anybody Else Feel Like They Don't Fit In?

I'm not trying to solve that problem, just pointing out that if GMs are commodified, then they certainly have the leverage to push back on that, if the shortage isn't just fake news.

Sometimes yeah. Specifically, I mean. More generally, people criticize my home game without necessarily knowing about my home game in a generic sense all the time.

And yet, word on the street is that there's a scarcity of GMs, at least for 5e.

D&D General D&D Assumptions Ain't What They Used To Be

I don't worry about inclusiveness. I'm not the best GM out there, but I'm pretty good. My game is exclusive. If someone doesn't like the way I do things, that's cool. Maybe next time. Or maybe not, I can play with someone else. It's no skin of my back if someone disagrees with me on how to game...

D&D General Why Do You Prefer a Medieval Milieu For D&D? +

Because that's what fantasy--as a genre--is defined by. If it doesn't have those tropes, it's atypical and doesn't feel like fantasy. I guess the deeper question then is why do I want fantasy at all. I think the romanticism of medievalism is something that's been part of Western Civilization...

D&D General D&D Editions: Anybody Else Feel Like They Don't Fit In?

?? I told them it was a D&D game because that's what they were interested in trying. I also told them that it would be a unique and unusual one, but since only one of them was a gamer really, the rest didn't have any frame of reference to how different it really was. Of course, my frame of...
