Ray Winninger comments on the OGL

I think people have a right to be. I'm not, but I get it, and I kind of would be amused of a whole ecosystem of "point and laugh" channels pop up to highlight every failure WotC has, just like has happened for nerd pop culture from Hollywood and the comics companies, etc.

OGL: What Are The Publishers Saying [UPDATED]

You must have had the luck to have had smarter upper management than my own direct, personal experience has been. I wouldn't trust upper management to have better than a 50/50 shot of even identifying correctly the problem that led to the result of the downgrade. But it seems we're not really...

OGL: What Are The Publishers Saying [UPDATED]

Fair enough; there are certainly other conclusions that are "drawable" from the data. In my experience, though, upper management of publicly held companies usually feel like drastic action of some kind is needed when your stock is downgraded by investment analysts. This would simply build on or...

OGL: What Are The Publishers Saying [UPDATED]

Rhetoric is kind of a devolved version of communication to begin with, but sadly, the majority of people are not fluent in dialectic. In any case, back to the topic, the more I dig into the financials of Hasbro and their status with the investment community, the more I'm getting a completely...

OGL: What Are The Publishers Saying [UPDATED]

The downgrade to sell by Bank of America is still valid regardless of the stock prices. I agree that analyzing stock prices can be difficult, because you can select comparison dates that appear to tell a very different story. But their long term reports on, say, Yahoo! Finance also show them...

OGL: What Are The Publishers Saying [UPDATED]

Since 2019, Hasbro has lost 45% of their stock value, and they were just downgraded a month or two ago by Bank of America to Sell. Ray Winninger was either pushed out the window, or jumped, right in the middle of the OneD&D launch, after appearing in the trailer looking pretty excited about the...

OGL: What Are The Publishers Saying [UPDATED]

Well, that's an interesting line of inquiry. Although a lot of people talk about how much money WotC made last year, the reality is that was a year ago, and the outlook has not been nearly as rosy the last 12 months or so. Professor Dungeon Master has made a bunch of videos in the last couple of...

Exactly my point. As is blithely suggesting that you're not even gambling... as long as its someone else's money.

But the INDUSTRY was fine. Not exactly my point, but a good side effect nonetheless.

Well, bring your lawsuit then, in whatever jurisdiction you can do so. I'll be cheering you on. Put your money where your mouth is. Whatever currency you like.

OGL: What Are The Publishers Saying [UPDATED]

Stuff was different in different markets too, though. Graeme Davis, in the revised Cubicle 7 "director's cut" of The Enemy Within mentioned that he was told by the head of Games Workshop to make the campaign the way he did in part because of the success of Call of Cthulhu and Thieves' World in...

    Why Open Gaming Is Important

I'm not 100% sure that it is. D&D and the RPG industry thrived for years without an Open Gaming paradigm throughout the 80s and 90s. It was different than it had been in the last few years, but it was a successful model nonetheless.

Are you suggesting that you can't adjust for that? Or merely that you don't know how to do so? Even so, the ratings are lower in the context of relatively depressed ratings than their predecessors.

And again, except even worse, in early 2023. I actually stopped playing D&D in 2008. I never moved into 4th or 5th edition, and became a gamer of other games. To date, I hadn't been very concerned one way or another what WotC did with 6e. From a personal standpoint, I guess that's still true...

Dude... look at the box office for Force Awakens vs... whatever the last one was called. 50% fall-off. Look at the ratings for Star Trek. They're happy with those? Maybe. But they're a fraction of what they were during, say, Next Generation. Suggesting that the profitability of these properties...

Losing half of your revenue movie to movie and destroying the profitability of your merchandise is "extremely successful?" Having ratings so low that they could be on the last level of a Gygaxian megadungeon is "extremely successful?" Yeah, the figures speak for themselves alright, and they say...
