What about grimdark or low magic GoT style game or heck LotR style?
  4. Uni-the-Unicorn!

    D&D 5E (2014) The Magical Martial

Yes, that is why flexibility is important. Thank you for pointing that out. Add that to the fact there are dozens of settings and styles of play for 5e in print now. I’m pretty confident D&D will continue to be a multi-genre game for many more years I never was. Not sure why that is relevant
  5. Uni-the-Unicorn!

    D&D 5E (2014) The Magical Martial

I’m speaking about how the game has been played for the 30yrs I’ve been playing.

    D&D 5E (2014) The Magical Martial

Oh it depends. If the rule is written players assume it is true, where that may not always be the case. Different play styles and different settings and environments impact these actions. Once it is on the page players feel entitled to what is written. Now a DM can overcome that, but it can...
  7. Uni-the-Unicorn!

    D&D 5E (2014) The Magical Martial

If that is what you think you have completed misunderstood the discussions. Which I already assume from your previous post - but just thought you should know except the rules are used for more than fantasy, or did you not realize that?
  8. Uni-the-Unicorn!

    D&D 5E (2014) The Magical Martial

Yes, that is works great for a fantasy setting, but D&D has for long time been used for more than fantasy
  9. Uni-the-Unicorn!

    D&D 5E (2014) The Magical Martial

I’ve gamed with my DM for 30 years and just trust him. Not sure what he does in his end
  10. Uni-the-Unicorn!

    D&D 5E (2014) The Magical Martial

Yes we are coming at this from very different perspectives. Describing my actions and being able to attempt it is all the rules I want and need as a player. I am only limited by my imagination. I prefer a rules light game, it seems you want a rules heavy game. I guess 5e being fairly rules light...
  11. Uni-the-Unicorn!

    D&D 5E (2014) The Magical Martial

I just read the rules again and the jump action describes what you can do with no check. If its longer or higher than the prescribed distance (or if there is an obstacle) then you need a check. Seems like we have been doing it correctly and feeling empowered all along! In fact, the rules...
  12. Uni-the-Unicorn!

    D&D 5E (2014) The Magical Martial

The fundamental rule of DND is the ability check. The covers virtually everything you need. That is the rules supporting you.
  13. Uni-the-Unicorn!

    D&D 5E (2014) The Magical Martial

Rarely have we encountered a situation where we need to jump something more than what we know we can. It is farther than we know we can do and we still want to try. It’s a check. Sorry, I’m voice dictating in the rain walking downhill. I’ll try to clean this up later.
  14. Uni-the-Unicorn!

    D&D 5E (2014) The Magical Martial

Our general approach is only use rules when you need them. I can’t think of a scenario where we needed to consult rules for our characters to jump.
  15. Uni-the-Unicorn!

    D&D 5E (2014) The Magical Martial

What about them. Everything I have read seems completely accommodating to them. No it is not. Or at least not the OP. Also, when it is about that one key difference is the bold word about. I am pretty sure the correct word is should or could, not must. The is a big difference in intent that...
  16. Uni-the-Unicorn!

    D&D 5E (2014) The Magical Martial

How do those get in the way? Not even sure why you need them, but they have never gotten in the way in our games
  17. Uni-the-Unicorn!

    D&D 5E (2014) The Magical Martial

Ok, this has become another thread about martial vs caster balance. I’m not interested in that. I will leave for greener pastures- enjoy your discussion!
  18. Uni-the-Unicorn!

    D&D 5E (2014) The Magical Martial

Again, you are talking about a specific rule set, not concept. Most of the discussion has been about the concept . The idea that people want to play something beyond what is physically possible. People want to play Heracles. So how do you that? One way is to draw a line and say beyond this...
