D&D General When Did Digital Art Become A Thing?

This whole reply is pretty much my thoughts exactly.

D&D General When Did Digital Art Become A Thing?

You do need to be careful with that assumption. Hand drawn can easily be digital. Many artist do (or at least did) make digital art like they do traditional art. Starting with a digital sketch (sometimes very detailed) before adding colors, shading, texture, etc. Heck, my partner has purchased...

D&D General When Did Digital Art Become A Thing?

Art in the 1e-3e area was all over the place IMO. There is good and bad. 4e was more consistent and better on average, but not quite my style for a lot of the edition. 5e has been better. Similar consistency to 4e, but more my style. The technical quality of the art has improved over the edition...

There is a lot bad art in 3.0/3.5 IMO, so I'm not surprised

D&D General When Did Digital Art Become A Thing?

Doesn't really help to much, but i just found a Jan. 2014 "article" on Wayne Reynolds that described him as one of the last traditional (pen and paint) RPG artists: Art of the Genre

D&D General When Did Digital Art Become A Thing?

OK, this art, War of the Dragons, from the 4e draconomicon 2 was all digital. So at least by 2009 D&D was using digital art.

D&D General When Did Digital Art Become A Thing?

@Zardnaar , of some relevance to this discussion: Wacom, who is/was the industry leader in digital art tablets, was founded in 1983 and introduced the first cordless pen in 1991. These first products were targeted directly at professional arts. This is just to say digital are has been produced...

D&D General When Did Digital Art Become A Thing?

I know several professional artists (some comic books) who have been all digital since late 90s or early 2000s

D&D General When Did Digital Art Become A Thing?

I can't say when it first cropped up in D&D art; however, I was making digital art when I was at university in the mid '90s. So I think it has been around a lot longer than you realize. A lot of digital art can look very similar to hand rendered art.

D&D 5E (2024) In Interview with GamesRadar, Chris Perkins Discusses New Books

While I agree it is a change, that doesn't make it a new "edition" necessarily. Anyway, I thought this quote from Perkins in the article was relevant: ""That said, it's OK if some things go away because they still exist in the game. This is still Fifth Edition. So if you want to play...

    D&D 5E (2024) This Dragon Art Is From The 2024 Player's Handbook

    D&D 5E (2024) This Dragon Art Is From The 2024 Player's Handbook

Just the opposite for me. It gives me none of the "valley of the uncanny" that AI art often creates for me. That being said, AI used by artist to modify, add to, touch-up, their own real art is virtually indistinguishable from digital art done without AI. People keep complaining about the...
