    City Life

I'd suggest these good city sources, which have plenty of scenario ideas: - Lankhmar (AD&D supplement) - Geanavue, Stones of Peace (d20, Kalamar setting)

    [4e] Companion Characters as PCs

Hi all, I'd like to get some feedback and suggestions about keeping damage and defenses of PCs viable in the following scenario: - I am going to use Companion Characters as full PCs, at least in terms of how many powers they get. But I do want to keep the half-level progression for attacks...

    D&D 5E (2014) Do you miss attribute minimums/maximums?

Ability checks featured already in the rules from the 1st Red Box by Tom Moldvay (1981). Judges Guild stuff from 1979 also has them (e.g. the Ref Sheets.)

    D&D 5E (2014) Do you miss attribute minimums/maximums?

But the mechanical incentives are considered strong by many players. My sister for example always plays a elf fighter/magic-user, and no other race can do this better than elves (also taking into account the elves' other specialties.) In 2e the option was given to raise the maximum levels based...

    D&D 5E (2014) Do you miss attribute minimums/maximums?

Fully agreed. After all, that's been the basic approach of D&D from the start; in OD&D (pre-Greyhawk supplement) and Classic D&D, the concept of class includes also race. AD&D took things a little step further, making classes a sort of special ability of races; if you want a non-human to be a...

    Pulling the plug

I can sympathize with the OP. I have the core 5e books, I am running two online campaigns, have run two online campaigns in the past, I have run one tabletop, and I am running another tabletop (at a glacial pace as we get to play only twice a year since we are in different countries)...but the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Adventures in Middle-Earth - Rhovanion Region Guide

Thanks for the kind words Jon! I think the session went reasonably well considering it was the first time with the new system for most of the players, and I don't have a lot of experience with TOR; I only ran two campaigns, one of which during playtesting, when the game was initially released in...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why FR Is "Hated"

Actually ToT covered going from AD&D 1e to AD&D 2e (the Forgotten Realms Adventures hardback covers everything). But from the point of view of clerics (at least, their in-game relationships with the gods) nothing really changed between 1e and 2e.

D&D 5E (2014) Survivor Core Classes- Fighter Wins!

Jon, if you ever want to run some AD&D with me on the other side, I'll make sure to play a Paladin (stats permitting, or using UA character generation ;) )

    D&D 5E (2014) Greyhawk Module

Seems fine to me. I did something similar for my 5e Known World game, so for example, only elves can be Eldritch Knights (to convert my sister's BECMI Elf character).

D&D 5E (2014) Resting and the frikkin' Elephant in the Room

Definitely a paradigm-shift issue. Like, in 13th Age a cleric can cast Resurrection at most 5 times IN HIS WHOLE LIFE, and when he casts it the 5th time, the cleric dies. I like the "out of the box" thinking that some of these changes produce.

D&D 5E (2014) Resting and the frikkin' Elephant in the Room

The abstract rest times (per "heal up", where the rate of "heal up" events doesn't necessarily match a physical unit of time) are working really well in my 13th Age campaign. I make sure that the in-game fiction "matches" the rule requirements, so the players have not complained and don't feel...

The Journey To...Romance Of The Three Kingdoms

I have been hitching to run some Mythic China scenarios for years. Ruleswise, I have yet to find a game I like. Dragon Fist looked like a good game, but I never gave it a proper time at the table (only the occasional one-shot.)

D&D 5E (2014) Why I Am Starting to Prefer 4d6 Drop the Lowest Over the Default Array.

Yeah, the Cleric in our Basic D&D game rolled a Dex 3, but the player found a way to make the character interesting.

Trudvang Chronicles Preview Part 2 - Rules

Is there a character sheet which can be downloaded? I'd like to get a feel for the complexity of the game; usually a character sheet is a pretty good indicator of how much "stuff" is going on in the game. Thanks, Antonio

New GM with new players. Best adventure?

Definitely YMMV (as always, after all). I have run it many times and always to good effect. Could have been bigger but as it stands it provides an incentive for the DM to expand.

New GM with new players. Best adventure?

BUT, considering you have AD&D 2e already, AND you like Forgotten Realms and are familiar with it, I'd suggest this: http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/16833/FRQ1-Haunted-Halls-of-Eveningstar-2e?term=haunted+halls+of+even&test_epoch=0&it=1 Written by Ed Greenwood himself, it's a...

New GM with new players. Best adventure?

I have run the original DL series of modules at least 5 times, and I agree that a lot depends on the DM. But to be fair, not all modules are "railroads"; only a few of them, actually (two or three out of 14, I'd reckon, are the worst offenders.) And even in the "worst" ones, only some parts of...

    Stat Blocks Kill Me

As suggested by someone else, I too keep only the stats relevant to the most likely role of the character. No need to create stats for the random peasant, really; but he/she can still be interesting to roleplay. Also, I run D&D 3.0, and the DMG is brilliant since it has fully statted characters...
