    The problem with D&D

Still don't see it. You have our fighter 20 run towards the troop lines which are just under five short bow range increments from the walls (250'). Warrior 1s armed with longspears and short swords run up and surround the F20 at a distance to two squares three ranks deep (40 warriors) with...

Do you allow murder within the party?

At the begining of the campaign, I ask if it is a cooperative game or a competitive game and they vote. Cooperative means there is no PvP actions and they can trust the new PC they meet in the bar to join in their party and not kill everybody the first night he takes watch. Competitive means...

    What does the fighter need...

I'd go for something like this as a fighter feat (tree). If for no other reason so the blind warrior or zen archer could be recreated.

    What does the fighter need...

I really do think the fighter is lackluster, and I don't mean injust flavor. When comparing a fighter 4/cleric 4 versus a fighter 8, the fighter 8 just seems to come out on the short end. Loss of two BAB, two feats and about 8 HP for four levels of divine caster, turning, and probably free...

Differences in powergaming in 1st/2nd and 3.0/3.5

IIRC, it took about a number of 8 hour sessions equal to current level to make next level when I played AD&D. We'd usually get to second in one sitting. Then to 3rd in two more, and etc. etc. Some more and some less. Most DMs gave XP for treasure as per rules, but different DMs gave out...

Human breeding stock required to support Mind Flayer / Illithid Community

Well, 100 mindflayers would be 100 brains a month which equals 1200 brains a years. To replace that, they need 1200 births a year. Ignoring deaths due to other means, and assuming that these brains are of at least breeding age, breeding age is 15, and that 50% of all breeding couples produce an...

    The problem with D&D

Could somebody please explain the mechanics of this to me? One 20th level fighter versus several hundred Warrior 1s. (We shall ignore that he is Achilles and apparently has damage reduction since it wasn't mentioned above, only his level.) Given that every natural 20 hits. If the F20 faces and...

When are rogues "really" necessary anymore? if at all...

That was our campaign last year. Evertbody made up characters and at the end, there were no spell casters and besides a bit off fear, they weren't really ever missed. It did cost a bit of money, but money is there to spend. Most of the resources didn't really go that quickly and we never even...

When are rogues "really" necessary anymore? if at all...

We replaced all our spell casters with rogues with Use Magic Device. Since all most wizards do is blast, usually a wand of some blasting spell will replace them fairly well. Once we got a wand of Cure Light Wounds, nobody missed the cleric. Except for a few potions, all stuff was picked up off...

    Military tactics vs. high-level spellcasters

Brings up a point. First thing I'd do is hire bards so they can Gather Information and use bardic knowledge to tell me what the wizards are probably capable of and what magic items they own. Works the other way too. Mage is pretty much attacking figures at random since he's at -80 on spot...

    Military tactics vs. high-level spellcasters

Put a skrimish line around the beseiged castle with defensive postions. Place your army about two miles from the castle. Since invisiblity and fly have 1 minute/level duration, given a 15th level wizard your army is pretty much outside his operational range. For the short term, attacks on the...

    Military tactics vs. high-level spellcasters

Wizards, in a fortress with meatsheilds is s tought nut to crack. They will be much easier to take down if you force them to attack your defensive postion. However, seiging wizards over a long time doesn't seem winnable. They can simply fly over every night and dump some AOE spells until they...

Because they have significant defensive strength.

    Military tactics vs. high-level spellcasters

Most summoning spells only last for a number of rounds equal to caster level. Hardly enough time to do much to a large group of men like an army. If they are properly disciplined and trained, threatened troops could probably simply flee such creatures till they are gone.

    Military tactics vs. high-level spellcasters

Ture enough, but that should be dealt with long before you wonder how to face him in combat. That the OP didn't address it, I assumed it was a non-issue, as otherwise, the real question would be how to defend your army while taking a month's march to their target. Pluss, drawing him into...

    Military tactics vs. high-level spellcasters

Assasination. If making an attack, do it all in one day and hope to expire his spell options. Spread out troops. Try probing attacks to draw his fire early on less critical targets. if you have to wait for the next, then he'll have a new set of spells. Or use the tactics that the US government...

    Mearls on Balance in D&D

There's my fear. Pretty much, in all his articles recently, I've agreed with what he said needed to change and why, then I read how he planned to change them and it was not something I could agree with at all. His changes seem to be based on design parameters that I cannot live with for D&D.

    The problem with D&D

Depends on who is the PC and who is the NPC IMHO. Two fresh 1st level PC fighters versus a 3rd level NPC fighter is probably a hard but winnable fight. A 3rd level PC versus two 1st level NPCs is a speedbump.
