Spiders in Drow of the Underdark

As an arachnophobe, just reading this thread gives me creeeps. However, I must side with the orginal poster that verisimilitude is desirable on such a simple topic. While I could accept liberties on such things as Aberations or outsiders, I suspect most of these are supposed to either be Vermin...

OOTS 450 - Wands are for Suckers

Love it. What are the winged bad guys you see in the first panel?

    Mechanics or story?

See, much like Rifts, I was the other way around. I found the mechanics passable (for the time period they came out) and had problems with setting. Not that I didn't modify or not use parts of the mechanics I found distastful, but still I have issues with both systems settings.

    Mechanics or story?

Hogwash. D&D and AD&D as well as a great many other games never came with any sort of story, yet we got along just fine. 3E doesn't have much of a story. Theoretically, Greyhawk is supposed to be the default setting, but this doesn't mean much except for a list of deities in the PHB which just...

Mechanics. I've already got my own story.

    OotS 448

Don't forget that Xykon was also shown casting spells. He didn't need for the insanity to kill everybody just slow their attacking of him so he can easily hit them with spells.

    Is D&D abstract or micromanaged?

Sure there is, heroic fantasy character can take more damage than lesser creatures. A great hero can be run through with a sword several times and suffer wounds that would kill a novice. Why? Because it's heroic fantasy. I put neither. I think it's a good balance and have been saying so since...

    Magic Jar: Is it useful?

Hrrm, wonder if it's worth looking into having BBEG keep pets that have more hit dice than themselves but weak combat ability. Special breeds of 20 HD lapdogs with a 1d4 bite attack.

    Why do elves suck?

Other - because they're usually just treated as humans with pointy ears and a dex bonus

    How to un-cheese D&D?

I'd lower the amount of magic items and treasure to something you feel is suitable and then change the XP chart back to an exponetial system so that PCs have time to gather magic and such back to CR appropriate challenges. That would also give a reason to limit the amount of high level NPCs and...

    Seriously considering dropping the hobby

If you're not having fun anymore, then stop, but don't sell your books or anything like that. Not the books you enjoyed playing with anyway. In a few years you could very well be up to play again with friend you get along with. Happened to me and I missed almost all of 2 & 3E. Eventually, I...

    Weapons of Legacy

Haven't seen the actual book but there were some legacy items in the Expedition to Ravenloft. To say the least, we were not impressed. All the PCs has already given them over to the NPCs to activate even before we found out about the penalties. One word of warning, be careful what you...

Whats going on in your game?

In D&D 3.5, we're 8th and 9th level and just killed Strahd in Expedition to Castle Ravenloft. DM wants to take a break and play some, and looks like I'll be taking over where I'll bump everybody up to 11th level so I can see some high level play. Questions are, should I stay in Greyhawk or...

DM Tricks to Challenge Tough PCs with Weaker Enemies

    * Illusions - Using illusions to make the PCs mistake what they are fighting or to obfuscate it completly can be an equalizer. Illusions on a minor threat so that PCs dump their major spells on it rather than the real medium threat they are facing. get them to burn their resources on things they...

Minority Opinion: Why is the loss of the magazines just fine?

To play Devil's Advocate, and to be honest, I bought and read Dungeon and Dragon and have since Dragon #32 with a break during 2E, but I don't think I've ever used anything from them in any of my games. They're neat to read and I'm sure I've gotten ideas from them, but the effort to write up...

BBEG and his plot to die.

He's cursed. Immortality comes from the curse or being possessed by some other creature that is evil and seeks to live forever. His good side, the original side that allowed this to happen, no doubt for some tragic reason, is not strong enough to kill himself or directly cause his own demise...

    Zine Sections?

I disagree. One of the things that would actually make me think about e-zine style dungeon would be the ability to print out maps at the right scale. Fancy maps in print magazines are usually useless because they've got the monsters and hidden features marked on them and need to be recreated by...

    Zine Sections?

I'm favorable to crunch and a steady supply of magic items, spells, monsters, and character classes. If not a fantasy game, there are corresponding elements in about any other game with tech, tools, weapons, etc. There doesn't have to be each in every issue, but every issue needs a little bit...

Fictional creatures that would make good monsters

I used the Brood from the X-Men. Flying insectile alien creatures who impregnate host creatures with their young and those young get the abilities and memories of the host creature.

    Nostalgia for Our Magazines

I started with Dragon #32. The old Hell articles, Pages for Mages, and Ecology of... articles all changed the shape of D&D for the better I feel. I think that Dragon was about to do it again with the Demonimicon and Beleif articles they were printing now.
