Iron Lore set outs to be a high action fantasy game where equipment matters far less than character abilities. If that's something you're interested in, you're gonna love it - because it achieves that goal really, really well. :)

Well, I still think that Hero's character creation is (if you know the system) more fully featured. You have to kind of eyeball a lot of stuff in MnM and say "that seems about right" -- Hero is so comprehensive on that front, it's scary. You can do everything in MnM that you can do in Hero...

Do you want a game where everything is thoroughly documented and statted out? Hero is for you. Do you prefer a game where you have to handwave a bit of stuff, but you get faster gameplay? Go for MnM. IMO, they are both great games, but with different strengths.

My fighters wear full plate when they are awake, too. But if I'm getting ambushed while I'm asleep, I'd rather be in a breastplate than the nothing-at-all you apparently favour :) High-level fighters have feats to burn. Endurance + bag of holding + magical breastplate = 24 hour protection...

The setting (302 pages) is $15. The Atlas (91 pages of maps) is $15. The "Full Map" (which is 9 feet across - nearly three metres) is $10. I expect (I haven't bought it) that you can get everything you need in the setting book, if you are happy with just a single one or two page map, as is...

Given AEG's other, far more egregious and lazy hand waves in designing WLD ("ban wizards", "ban druids", "ban taking 10 and taking 20", "ban summoning", "ban web and other spells"), I'd say that non-standard XP is the least of your worries :)
