    D&D 5E (2014) D&D is Getting Unweildy

I agree that the huge pile of books and boxed are intimidating in the store. But if you have the information that you only need a boxed set or the core 3 + adventure, it shouldn't be any more of an issue than in 2014. On a player coming to the table with a Tasha character, there is a certain...

    Grognard view of One D&D?

It was an unstated assumption. I'll rephrase it if you like:

    Grognard view of One D&D?

Sure. It still wouldn't cover everyone's desires and wouldn't fun for everyone even if more people were pleased. Supplements can address those niche desires without impacting the core. They don't need to meet those design goals and can focus on different things.

    Grognard view of One D&D?

Of course D&D needs to be fun. :) But, what is fun for one person is not always fun for another. You can see that in the thousands RPGs, board games, books, media, etc. Most of them were fun for someone. None of them were fun for everyone. You can see that in the arguments between edition fans...

    Grognard view of One D&D?

I don't think that creating a game that everyone wants is that easy. If you tried to do that you would end up with a camel that no one wants. The way I see it, there are three design goals for D&D: It needs to be a gateway game. Because it is an order of magnitude larger that any other RPG, it...

    D&D 5E (2024) Inspiration change to reroll

I don't generally play on tables that use inspiration, but have always thought it should be a re-roll. I think using it as RAW adds to decision paralysis in a boring way. Re-rolling would be much better. Caveat: I mostly play martial characters. They tend to get fewer rolls with high impact...

    D&D General Player Responsibilities

Knowing the rule & character abilities is an interesting one. As a DM I want the players to know their characters so I don't need to even have to know those rules. But, being accessible for new players means accepting players don't know them. I play in a game store which manages the tables...

D&D 5E (2014) What (if anything) do you find "wrong" with 5E?

I would say the framework for creating adventures and NPCs should be more like Sly Flourish's. I just don't find it useful. Okay for adventure hooks but it needs more. And 10 sentences on an NPC is more than I can keep in you immediately after I've created them, let alone during play.

I wasn't 100% clear on what your concerns were. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you were concerned that the proportion of 1st and 2nd ed. players is underestimated compared the 50 million figure. Is that correct? Comparing the 4 million with the 50 million figure is going to be...

Those surveys something about the players, but not the number of players. You could ask a bunch of random people if they have played ad&d, but that would be expensive. Or fermi estimation. I'm not sure what other options there are.

Do we have any idea on the methodology they would have used for the 6m figure? Have they done they own fermi estimation?
