    Treasure and leveling comparisons: AD&D1, B/ED&D, and D&D3 - updated 11-17-08 (Q1)

If you look at the actual lists of treasure provided, you will find that the bulk of mundane treasure lootable from most modules is in the form of relatively easily transportable gems, jewelry, and other modest encumbrance items. There are relatively few instances in which a pile of coins is...

    Treasure and leveling comparisons: AD&D1, B/ED&D, and D&D3 - updated 11-17-08 (Q1)

This has been addressed in the thread, and it turns out the "hidden" treasure in 1e modules amounts to a trivial percentage of the total haul available, and furthermore, the hiding places are in many cases so obvious that only a party compsed of idiots would miss them. For example, Lareth has...

How did initiative rules make casters stronger in 3E?

That's not really a problem related to the initiative system though. That's a problem with 3.0 Haste. I always think the Quicken Spell criticisms are overblown - to use it you use a spell slot four levels higher than normal. To whip out a quickened magic missile you have to use a 5th level spell...

Magic Items that lost their magic

Now, I guess so. Traditionally? Not so much. He wore the belt when he used the hammer because he couldn't lift it otherwise. Plus, the comics give no reason why he didn't wear Megingjord all the time to begin with. I guess he just wanted to make things harder on himself most of the time. I...

What Would Happen If (Almost) Nobody Paid for RPGs?

If you want to know what the RPG market would probably look like if producing games was apure labor of love with little expectation of possible financial renumerations, look to the tabletop Wargames hobby. Limited run games produced by people more interested in their community reputation than...

Martial arts affecting your GMing style

I don't think anyone would ever confuse Lieber, Moorcock, Vance, or Howard with literature. They were pulp writers, and good ones. Wolfe might be considered literature by some, but that doesn't make his books a mess. More to the point, these were the authors (except for Wolfe, who came later)...

WotC president Greg Leeds and I!!!

Waste of time to talk about this. i don't like 4e, but WotC isn't going to go back to 3e at this point. This is one issue that might make some inroads on the 3e/4e debate. The issue here is the "either one edition or the other" poison pill in the GSL. They could (in my opinion) bring back a...

You probably also can't imagine the rapidity with which such a company would go out of business.

WotC puts a stop to online sales of PDFs

Laches can be applied in a situation where a statute of limitations exists, and if it does, then it is almost certainly shorter than the SoL. But courts (in my experience) don't like to apply laches under those circumstances, finding that it usurps the authority of the legislature in many cases...

WotC puts a stop to online sales of PDFs

I am a lawyer. I have handled some trademark issues, and a few copyright matters, but not for a while (I work for the government these days, and copyrights are not so much of an issue for us). But: Probably not. The only legal theory I could think of that might prevent you from recovering in...

WotC puts a stop to online sales of PDFs

The contracts have already been executed, so "maintenance" is likely trivial, if anything. Managing the fees is simple bookeeping, which they probably have people on staff for. It is almost impossible to imagine a scenario in which the marginal costs of the accounting work involved are not...

WotC puts a stop to online sales of PDFs

Unlikely. I've never seen a case where that argument has carried any weight. I haven't been involved in any copyright cases in a while though, so maybe there's been something in the last couple years. I'd need to see a transcript of such a case to find it plausible.

WotC puts a stop to online sales of PDFs

For .pdfs that are already available the work is done. For .pdfs being sold by Paizo and RPGNow, the bandwidth is paid for by someone other than WotC. How does keeping .pdfs available under these circumstances cost WotC any money?
