Indeed, that could very well be how WotC is thinking about the whole situation. Ideally, I'd prefer a different delivery method for my secrets. Oh well, I should probably just content myself with setting guide books from now on and be happy with that. At least it's something.

I have to agree. DragonLance doesn't feel like an open world to me. Starting a campaign there would make me feel like I'm messing up or interfering with a preexisting story in some way. I'm sure not everyone feels that way but it's why I prefer other campaign settings.

Unfortunately, no one knows what WotC plans to do with any of the other settings right now (they might not even be sure at this point themselves). There might be more Realms books coming after the Sword Coast Adventurers Guide or that might be the only book they produce for the Realms for this...

PAX announcements will almost certainly be unsurprising and underwhelming. WotC will probably only talk about what is already in the works. Best thing is that we'll most likely get to see some preview copies of Out of the Abyss. I'm already yawning a little.
