D&D 5E (2014) Legend Lore says 'story not rules' (3/4)

Yes, this. Not rules modules. I really shouldn't try to write these at 11 PM on Thursday night.

This One Goes to . . . Ten [Merged four Oct 29 Playtest Package announcement threads]

I meant spell level, so two spells each from 1st to 5th spell level. I need to review the "Use of the Word Level" section from basic D&D before I write these things!

Mike Mearls: A Paladin, Ranger, and Wizard With Arcane Tradition Walk Into A Tavern

FWIW, the tradition approach makes it very easy for us to mix different spell casting mechanics into one class. So, you can imagine one tradition gives only dailies, and another gives signature spells unique to it that you can regain, and so on. Those differences can also extend to at-will...

Dear bloody god: Calystrx (Threats to Nentir Vale Preview)

Yes, that was the inspiration. I loved the Fifth Age RPG.

Are Essentials more old school or just a clever marketing ploy?

I think you can learn a lot about a game by listening to how people describe it after they play it. It shows you how they interact with, see, and process the game. For instance, last weekend I played Carcassonne. I had some lucky draws I was able to exploit by managing my meeples well. I was...

    Mike Mearls ruined my composure

The same *exact* thing happened during my Keep on the Borderlands campaign. I dropped the name without even thinking about it, and the table burst into laughter. I think I'm going to change the guy's name to Balsac. That'll fix it.

New Essential Cleric Support in Oct Dragon

New domains are a lot of fun to design. If anything, we'll have to make sure we don't do too many. While the domains support the warpriest with class features and new options for the paragon path included in Heroes of the Fallen Lands, they also include 2 at-wills and an encounter power at each...

    Mike Mearls Ruined Everything

Here's a post to point out that I haven't posted in a while. Note that this post does not count as an actual post, per se, but is merely an observation regarding the lack of posts and should not be regarded as an actual post for purposes of determining my last post as such. I hope that's clear.

    Modron Modron Mooooodroooon!

Glad folks liked the seminar. Funny how the modron was on that list, isn't it?

To Mike Mearls: Melee training and the Battlemind

When we talked about the change to Melee Training, we also talked about feats, powers, and other options for classes that like basic attacks but don't use Strengths. It's something that is on our to do list. I'll make sure we look at the shaman AC issue while I'm at it and approach it from a...

    Essentials Rogue is up!

It does not apply to curse and especially hunters quarry, for precisely the reasons you cite. And yes, warlords are happy. From the design side, I really like that the martial leader interacts really well with the essentials martial classes. It's fitting, IMO.

    Essentials Rogue is up!

I believe it is an change for the sneak attack mechanic used by all rogues, rather than just a change for the thief.

    Essentials Rogue is up!

I believe sneak attack is intended to be used every turn rather than round. The idea behind Feinting Trick is to give you what amounts to a different striker mechanic for when you can't get combat advantage. For instance, a short bow using thief can get a lot of mileage out of that trick at...

    Essentials Rogue is up!

Blarg. You're not missing anything. Normally a trick's effects and combat advantage would work together. That's what I get for posting almost immediately after jogging a mile.

    Essentials Rogue is up!

That is correct. The rogue's back stab fills that space. Looks like it's a simple copy and paste error. There have been some issues in keeping the format when transferring text from the PDFs to HTML, so I imagine that the power strike text was accidentally left in whatever template is used for...

    The Essentials Fighter

A quick word on balance: The roles go a long way to making sure that, even if classes have different types of powers, they all play an important and useful role in the game. Regardless of how a wizard uses his powers, he can't duplicate the knight's ability to lock down monsters and hold them...

    The Essential Knight

There were a few jokes about that during the design process. Really, though, the mechanic is meant to capture the flavor of an alert, experienced warrior. While the rogue inspects a locked door and the wizard tries to translate the runes scribed above it, the fighter keeps his eyes open for...

    The Essential Knight

Yes. Sorry it wasn't as clear as it could be. I was speaking from a design standpoint.

    The Essential Knight

If it fits the class's flavor, we'd consider doing that.

    The Essential Knight

You can expect that most classes going forward will have: 1. A unique mechanic, either in terms of actual rules or flavor/effect. Knights have stances, warpriests have domains, mages have schools. 2. The option to use a standard 4e power advancement scheme, like the mage and warpriest, or...
