You're right there. The stone won't return to true like an arrow will as it flexes after passing the stave. The user has to allow the bow to rotate as he releases, and it has to be done with such timing that the stone flies true, and the hand is not struck. Though I think, once the timing is...

FWIW, I always house ruled that slings don't suffer penalties for poor strength--thus helping to explain why they're so popular with small creatures, such as Halflings. Damage for a sling is more about velocity, and this should be governed by DEX.

Incidentally, there was also a shortbow version of the stonebow. I think I've got an article about it in an issue of Primitive Archer--I'll see if I can dig it up. IIRC, the article concerned its use in Nepal (?). There was a prohibition against needlessly killing animals, yet the farmers...

In addition to John Warry's text, two books that I can't recommend highly enough if you're interested in the period... Peter Connolly's Greece and Rome at War--similar to Warry's, but with greater detail. Brassey's Roman Army, Wars of the Empire by Graham Sumner--makes use of color photographs...

Speaking of tossing coins... That's the very mechanic used in the old Prince Valiant RPG. As far as RPGs go that are easy for a newbie player (as well as GM) to jump right in and play--I think it's hard to beat the old Basic D&D red booklets.
