    D&D 4E I'm NOT upset about 4E

Same reasons here, while I own a lot of 3.5 stuff, I stopped buying "player" stuff after 3.0 (learned a lesson :-) ) Actually, I am really exited about the new edition, they try to fix nearly all issues I had with 3.5. (Game Speed, Prep Time, extended Sweet Spot) If they succeed it will be...

How to make D&D games run faster?

Oh, I should mention, I posted this in the Houserules Forum, because I thought about how to change the game to achieve that goal. I know there is a couple of tricks to run the current edition faster, but my intention was, to look for rules that make those tricks unnecessary. (Use Spell Cards ->...

How to make D&D games run faster?

I thought alot about how to make D&D run faster, recently. I think there are two points that can be made simpler, generation of game material (characters, monsters, adventures) and the game itself. I thought more about how game is run, and what changes would speed this up. These are areas that...

Regardless of Edition, what do you like about D&D?

I loved about AD&D 2nd that we were able to create characters within 30 minutes, once we decided what to play. (2 hours of skimming through class kits to get some neat ideas, but no actual work involved in creating a character.) I loved that I was able to wing close to everything as a DM...

Do you think the ___ Orb line of spells are too powerful?

I think them to be both to powerful and I do not like them being conjurations. That put aside, every spell that effects others from the SC uses Spell Resistance in my game, which fixes the orbs just in the right way. (And lessens the issue of SR being useless and "overprized")

Resist Energy, Mass - Encounter Problem

First of all, thanks for many great replies. Lord of the Uttercold seems to be an amazing way to at least solve part of the problem. And as I do not want to punish my players for choosing to use Energy Resistance, a very good solution for the casters. I should have made it more clearly though...

Resist Energy, Mass - Encounter Problem

During my campaign I want to use both a Frost Giants and a Fire Giants Stronghold. I would like to use strong elemental/energy themes, but with Resist Energy, Mass being available to my players, that hardly seems possible. Not allowing that spell is no longer an option, and at the time I...

Campaign Help - Need Encounters and maybe Story Ideas

I could need some help with the development of my campaign. To keep things interesting for me, I abandoned the idea of running Expedition to the Demon Web Pits in favor of an opener approach. In a way, I run the whole campaign sandbox style. There is 3 things I have not done with this campaign...

Death & Dying - a better (and simple!) system.

Yep, but as I said, there is allready a feat allowing you not to automaticaly fail a Fort when rolling a natural 1. Otherwise I would not do that either. (Or maybe with a, you do not automaticaly fail on a nat 1, but loose 10hp instead of 2hp) In my campaign, just last session, the 8th Level...

Death & Dying - a better (and simple!) system.

I think your system is good so far, but at least my players could not really be bothered with that die hard feat, because most of the time, the save stays at "don't roll a 1" level for most characters, except the very fragile ones. I think Die Hard should be a good feat for the though heroes at...

    I'm out of ideas

Hmm, grab a lot of interessting swampy monsters for "random" encounters, let them find a clue (like the rotten cadaver of a human who might have worked for the wizards) They might use magic to find something out about this cadaver or they might not. If they do, use the cadaver to point them...

What's Really Wrong with Melee Weapon Mastery

Actually, it is not at all. It is an upper level feat, and alltough the "lategame" phb feats do not become better, all of the ones in PHB2 do. I think there is a simple reason for that. It allows the high level fighter to buy high level powers. Not just more low level ones.

What's Really Wrong with Melee Weapon Mastery

Well, first of all I made the choice to spare the avarage fighter a feat, but I make it spread the whole Weapon Spec Chain (The Improved Feats, too), so it is quite interessting for 2-Weapon Fighters who do not want to use the same weapon in both hands. And I think that it is fine, this way. I...

What's Really Wrong with Melee Weapon Mastery

I, too, don't think anything is wrong with that feat, but I do not like the way it "scales" the fighter. (Serious bump at level 8) In my campaign we do not use it, but double the bonus of Improved Weapon Focus and Improved Weapon Spec. (Thus, the result is the same) Melee Weapon Masters does...

Death & Dying - a better (and simple!) system.

Hmm, I thought about it a bit more, here is what I would do: Have all your players record their "Death Save". Make this save equal to Fort+5 This will allow them to successfully save in the later game, when they can easily be hit toward -20hp. Have them role against neg HP. If successfull...

Death & Dying - a better (and simple!) system.

The rule as written by eamon (first post) is really simple and light on math: Roll Fort against half neg HP or die, if successfull, loose 2 hp. Repeat that 5 times, after which you remain stable. Works great, but you could go for a deadlier but easier variant and role against full negative...

    A Band of Vikings

okay, I do not own a copy of the Bo9S so I will not be able to use those classes. I think the idea to use simple classes is great. A Thor Shaman (modified DS) with a Wolf Companion (via Wild Cohort Feat) as Leader seems to be a great and fun character. A Bear Warrior or a simple Barbarian as...

    A Band of Vikings

Great suggestions so far. Two things that came to my mind: I want non-humans among the characters. Thanks for all ideas for such characters. Sadly, Midgard Dwarves are to powerful, otherwise I would have liked something like those. The adventure has the heroes being a neutral party in a war...

    A Band of Vikings

I need some creative input. This summer I will DM a One-Shot set in a nordic background (Ill Made Graves from Dungeon Mag 133). The Adventure is similar to 13th Warrior in tone. I want to play it with 4 10th level characters, what do you think would make a cool group of "nordic" heroes? As they...

    Do you describe HP abstractly?

On player demand, we play with the abstract description, where wounds besides bruises and scratches only happen after you lost roughly 3/4 of your HP total. But, as I as a DM do not want to follow every players HP, I let them describe the hits (and the defensive maneuver that was so exhausting...
