Tactical Gaming and Character Building to complicated in D&D?

Well, using a Whirlwind Attacking giant (spring attack being a prereq) kind of showed that, but I plan to do exactly that once they encounter the drow. Still, I guess it will give them more of the "DM showing off what the system can do but still useless for players" feeling... they allways...

Tactical Gaming and Character Building to complicated in D&D?

Hmm, I can't remember "Death through AOO". I really do not know where that came from. But, yep, some of them are really afraid of being hurt. (The Rangers player particularly, he prefers to play ranged combatants) That was allready that way when I joined the group.

Tactical Gaming and Character Building to complicated in D&D?

My players know when they would get an aoo, but to them, those are like the worst thing that can happen. They do not see that there are situations where it is better to provoke an aoo than to hold your ground.

Tactical Gaming and Character Building to complicated in D&D?

Thanks for all tipps so far. Some answers: Some of my players really like combat, and the other half likes to use their "cool abilities" in combet (wether thats a good idea or not) Their main tactical problem is, I guess, not knowing D&D tactics. Again and again they just misjudge what certain...

Tactical Gaming and Character Building to complicated in D&D?

okay. The Cast: A Goliath Fighter5/Barbarian1: A Damage Monster. (Allways enlarged when raging) the only non damage Feat is Knockback, which allows him to push enemies away from him, when hitting with a melee attack and using power attack. Skills: Climb A Woodelf Ranger7: Lots of arrows...

Tactical Gaming and Character Building to complicated in D&D?

lol, actually, I own and like that system. (Used it for 2 one shots) My players do not like not having unlimited building options. (Allthough they do not use those... oh well...)

Tactical Gaming and Character Building to complicated in D&D?

Hi, my current campaign is running great, but I think I can see my players have a bunch of problems. While the roleplaying part is great, the gaming aspect of D&D seems to overwhelm them. We play D&D 3.5 together for 3 years know and I always knew about this problem, I just thought it would...

Return of the Queen of the Spiders Campaign (Work in Progress)

We have a campaign journal (in german) written by one of my players here: obergnom.bboard.de Currently not up to date (1st and last 2 sessions missing, but those will follow shortly)

    D&D 4E I'm not gonna do 4E

I will play it. I am convinced they will change just enough to make the game better without it being totaly different (close to what they do with SW Saga, I would gues) and as I did not buy any class options books or the like for 3.5, why not? Of course, my collection of monster manuals for 3E...

I have :-) But you need the 4 old completes to fully benefit from it. And the feat tables for quick NPC generation are full of errors. Besides that, it is a fantastic book.

There are two more enviromental books. Cityscape and Dungeonscape. I don't know if those are good though. Drow of the Underdark covers Drow in detail. There are a few non drow Monsters in there, but it's only worth it if you build some adventures using drow. Something thats true for all the...

What DO you DO for... Fighters?

Stance Fighter Variant Remove: Fighter Bonus Feats Get: Combat Stance, Stance Feats, Quick Stance Combat Stance: At Level 1, a Fighter starts out with one "Stance". Stances are sets of Feats, and a Fighter can have only one Stance active at any one time. Changing between Stances is a...

Complex underpowered magic items in Magic Item Compendium

I think thats among the greatest oversights in that book. In the "Using magic items" Chapter it is stated that especially the x/day items would require the User to wear them for a certain time to function, till know I only know of the chronocharms to use that rule. Well, I do not think my...

Complex underpowered magic items in Magic Item Compendium

Thats exaclty my experience. The players are less likely to be impossible to hit, for example, but they are also more capable to turn around a bad situation because they allways have a few more tricks up their sleeve.

Okay, here is what I find most useful in our games: (Being DM most of the times) Character Generation/Players Stuff: Magic Item Compendium (reinveted a whole part of character generation for my group. We used to mostly use +x items, now it is like you can give every character cool abilities)...

Complex underpowered magic items in Magic Item Compendium

I recently started a campaign at six level, no player was allowed to buy items above item level 6. All of them are equiped with a bunch of cool x charges per day items, and having played at that level earlier, it makes the game much more interesting. Sure, they do not have a +2 to ability item...

Ravenloft: Dominion - aka Ravenloft novels outside Ravenloft

he, same here. (Except for the Castel RL one-shot) I used the setting more like a tool box of good ideas how to make gothic horror happen in regular D&D (At that time, the Forgotten Realms)

    Signature Feats for Kuo-Toa

thanks for that insight. I was recently looking into the Kuo-Toa's entry in the 2nd Ed. MM, and they were tough, but I was not sure how that would effect combat (I have never used them in 2nd Ed., and never played an older edition)

    Signature Feats for Kuo-Toa

Where are those feats from? I wanted to make them rangers because I thought some points in Hide or Move Silently help, and the +2 an reflex saves is nice. As they should be CR3, they only get 1 class level. Of course, as level 1 Fighter they would have one extra feat, but I do not even know...
