I tend to do a small (max 5 page) guide for the players that covers a basic map, rough outline of the nations/cities, some commonly known history and then end it with any game relevant info such as races, classes, gods...etc.

I agree. I always "make" a cleric worship a deity or other powerful supernatural entity in order to get their spells and abilities. The idea of a cleric worshipping a concept or ideal has never sat well with me within the confines of a game world where gods and devils/angels are a known quantity.

It wasn't D&D but a Rolemaster campaign a friend ran in the early 90s. First session he introduced the campaign villain on a balcony doing his evil monologue. The halfling ranger in the party decided to chance it and throw his bolas, critical hitted and killed the villain within the first 10...

For me, it is partly world-building and partly telling cool stories with my friends. Although it's also the monsters. As a kid wanting to get into D&D I loved reading about monsters and folklore, and it was a part of what I enjoy most about being a DM.

As my way back in to D&D since 3.5, I'm still buying into it.

As I'm coming back to D&D with 5.5 I'm just going to suggest to my players that we go custom and that we create a background that fits their character concept.

On the flip side, I never liked how Eberron worked because of this. I played two campaigns under 3.5 back in the day and it was the magic as technology angle that I could never get my head around. As a case of study, it showed how a D&D world could look like if the magic levels of the game were...

Rotes just for the ease and simplicity. I've played two Mage campaigns in the past and I hated their dynamic put spells together approach.

From what I understand you can still play a Half Elf by taking the Elf ancestry. I'd prefer to have Half Elves and Half Orcs but I can understand why they aren't there.

Always but mainly to hide notes and maps. Up until a few years ago I always rolled behind the screen but then I changed to rolling in open as it got a better reaction from my players.

I agree with this. I always shake my head when I read that some DM's allow their players to play monster races. Drow I can sort of accept as they are elves and not all are Lloth worshippers or slavers. But Orcs, Goblins (PF2 looking at you...), Bullywugs...etc, are going to get jumped the moment...

They get it when they get it and if they want it. If it rolls up as a treasure fine, otherwise if they have the gold and they want it, they will buy it. It shouldn't be level dependent.

I am very much guilty of this. In our Pathfinder games most of us use Herolab because after a certain point it's so much easier for the computer to handle to modifiers and complexities. I'm 50 now and compared to just 5 or 6 years ago, my attention span drops considerably and I'll find myself...

As someone who has GMed/Played Pathfinder 1st since it was launched over continuing with D&D, this new D&D 5.5 has me hooked to come back. I can't really comment on the 2014 version as my experience is limited, but 5.5 has me stoked again - a feeling that has been missing for several years.

I had never heard the term until twenty years ago on these very forums where I was accused of being a "neckbearded grognard." That I read it as grog-nard too probably didn't help. It doesn't bother me these days. At 50 years old I take it meaning a long term gamer and nothing else.

I saw it on Facebook recently and I can't resist dinosaurs. Only bought the PDF as the book was a tad too expensive. Can't wait to do a lost world campaign.

We haven't done anything with Daggerheart since the first update. We're waiting to finish our current Pathfinder campaign (not far off) before we return to it.
