D&D General Should ranger get a companion as its 'signature' feature?

I like Ranger but I've never cared for the animal companion aspect of the class. To me, the archetype of the Ranger is a hunter, wilderness guide and ranged (archer) combatant. I don't see it as a class that should always have an animal companion.

D&D General Race Has No Mechanics. What do you play?

Yes. As others have said, you just say human. You have to have something to help with the immersion in both game and setting.

D&D General What Do Tabaxi Look Like in Your Games? (A Poll)

Type 4 every time. Maybe Type 5 for barbarian types. I like them more realistic looking even in a fantasy environment.

Does Your Campaign Have a BBEG? Does it Need One?

You don't need to have a BBEG but it is a troupe that makes more sense than not. I don't think I have ever seen a campaign or adventure path where there wasn't a specific Big Bad at the culmination. The only way I can think of it, would be to disrupt/disband an organisation but even then, I'd...

    D&D 5E (2014) Magic Resistance Alternatives

If you have multiples of creatures don't roll individual saves. One roll and apply it to the lot. That is what I've done for years and it works fine.

    Planning, prep, motivation and you?

It's how my group usually works. They are quite good at keeping notes and records - something I'm bad at as a player. Keeping that in the hands of the players has been a godsend.

How Serious Do You Like Your Gaming?

We all have fun and a laugh but whether playing or DMing, I want a serious game. I see games going silly with the amateur dramatics and silly voices (Critical Roll, looking at you too) and I know I wouldn't enjoy a game like that.

    AD&D 1E AD&D- The DM Player

There's a big thing about getting players to be Dungeon Masters, but I've always felt that once a player sees what is going on behind the curtain, it ruins the player enjoyment. I think it's better for players to not know. I find running games for players who have never GM'd a game is a much...

    Planning, prep, motivation and you?

I tend to start at the end with the Big Bad. Who, where and why. Then I sort of work backwards before working out how the characters are drawn into it. I often take inspiration from how Paizo's adventure paths are done.

    Planning, prep, motivation and you?

I should have included this in my previous post but got distracted I'm a more visual person. It's film and TV that get's the imagination and inspiration going. My DVD shelf has the Peter Jackson Middle Earth trilogies, all the Ray Harryhausen movies, the Mythica films in a box set, Outlander...

    Planning, prep, motivation and you?

I experienced something similar after Covid. The only RPG gaming I got to do during the pandemic was a fortnightly D&D5 campaign online using Roll20. I have to say I hated it and it's only now that I'm getting to play 5E in person that I am enjoying it. Anyhoo... my first PF1 campaign back...

D&D General Why Do You Prefer a Medieval Milieu For D&D? +

When 9 year old me was introduced to the idea of D&D in the early 80s, it was always billed as a medieval fantasy and that is how I view it even. I like the concept of castles and kings, knights in plate facing dragons and monsters...etc. Modern fantasy and D&D doesn't fit that anymore but I...

D&D General D&D Editions: Anybody Else Feel Like They Don't Fit In?

Because I want that fake medieval feel. 1st and 2nd edition, you could do it. Just not so much now and I get that. I happily run and play D&D and other TTRPGs but I always long for that old style game feel.

D&D General D&D Editions: Anybody Else Feel Like They Don't Fit In?

I know, but it's the closest you can come I guess without turning the whole world into something that doesn't really work except as an odd super hero game. It's just how D&D plays unfortunately.

D&D General D&D Editions: Anybody Else Feel Like They Don't Fit In?

I get this. I really do. 1st and 2nd edition felt faux medieval to me. Middle Earth with a little more magic to it. Once 3rd edition/Pathfinder went dungeon punk and whatever it is 5th is now, I felt left behind. Once everyone has magic, NPC and PC alike, that feel has gone. It's Eberron and...

D&D General Defining "New School" Play (+)

This might go slightly off book here but the following comes to mind. It's something that has come up in discussions with fellow role-players in person and online over the last 10-15 years. There is, as many have pointed out in this discussion, little real difference between the two schools, so...

D&D General Defining "New School" Play (+)

Every group has always played RPGs differently to the majority of other groups out there. However, I would say that compared to how it used to be in the 80's and 90's, these are the differences that I've seen now. 1. Session Zero. We never used to do this. Everyone turned up on the night...

How Do You Feel About Published Adventures as a GM?

Decades ago I loved published adventures and would often slot them into home brew scenarios in my campaigns. These days I don't have the time and I much prefer having a full published campaign. From the last 15 years GMing and playing Pathfinder 1st edition, I have come to love how Paizo do...

D&D General When did you leave D&D? Why? For what game? And what brought you back?

I always wanted to play D&D when I was ickle. Started with the old red box basic D&D, moved to 1st edition and then 2nd. Played second from launch through to 3rd. When 4th was announced I looked into it and I hated it. It felt like a massive step backwards and it was not for me or my group. We...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you ever roll for monster HPs in 5E?

Haven't rolled monster/NPC hit points since 1st edition. I prefer to give max HP simply because player characters are often more powerful than the monsters, so this makes the encounters more balanced.
