    Dependency on Character Creation Apps?

We primarily play Pathfinder 1st edition and most of us use Herolab, and that works fine. I find phone apps like Pathbuilder are not that helpful as they generally aren't intuitive. Although, reading through your post again, are the players not keeping track of their characters themselves?

D&D General What Are Adventurers In Your World?

To me, they are effectively mercenaries, sell-swords, warrior or wizard for hire. Adventurers are those who live on the fringes of society because of what they do - they aren't farmers, shopkeepers... etc, like everyone else. They are perhaps a necessary nuisance to communities or lords because...

How 'Hope' and 'Fear' Work In Critical Role's Daggerheart

I was triggering my adversaries to go as well. I'll keep an eye on the encounters at the next session and see if I notice I'm not doing enough.

How 'Hope' and 'Fear' Work In Critical Role's Daggerheart

In the other discussion, I was asked the same thing. We kept out of combat rolls to a minimum and unless there was a need to roll we didn't bother. If the character could do something then they did it. As for everything else, yep, I was doing that. The only thing that I thought might have made...

How 'Hope' and 'Fear' Work In Critical Role's Daggerheart

Only one playtest session so far (second one will be this weekend) and I certainly think the GM ends up with too many. It doesn't take long to max out and then despite spending, you easily max out again. Sometimes it felt like the only way I was going to burn through these was to be a complete...

Critical Role's 'Daggerheart' Open Playtest Starts In March

Breaking the game is part of what they want from the playtest. So this is something to report to them.

Critical Role's 'Daggerheart' Open Playtest Starts In March

I was discussing this with one of my players yesterday because of that video. We both felt that it depended on the encounter. In the two fights I put them through in our first playtest, the Wizard, for example, cast one spell and then stayed out of the fight. In the second fight, against 6...

What is your favorite RPG book of all time?

Under 2nd edition AD&D, the Aurora's Whole Realms Catalog. A well stocked equipment guide disguised as a in-game mail order catalog. Where as players rarely added to their mundane gear, everyone bought stuff from this.

Hypothetical Fun: What If A Different Genre Was The RPG Foundation?

I'd be more inclined to say that science fiction would have been the RPG market leader if fantasy had not been so dominate. Something like classic Buck Rogers or even Star Trek (only a decade or so before D&D) could have been what launched role-playing games.

Critical Role's 'Daggerheart' Open Playtest Starts In March

As I mentioned, after just one session, the whole group was like "we want to do this". Definitely a winner for us.

Pathfinder 1E Are people still playing Pathfinder 1e?

We've been playing Pathfinder 1st since it launched and for me, it's arguably my favourite fantasy RPG. However, I really dislike the 2nd edition of the game even though we had a good couple practice sessions with it a month or so ago. Pathfinder took what worked so well with 3rd edition D&D and...

D&D General Bob World Builder Recreates WOTC's "Do You Like Me?" Survey!

I only found Bob's channel about a month or two ago while looking for some Daggerheart content. I like his channel a lot more than many others as he's positive about his subjects and doesn't try to do the over the top excitement approach that irritates me with so many other channels.

Critical Role's 'Daggerheart' Open Playtest Starts In March

I have been role-playing, both player and GM, since the late 80s, and that is with dozens of game systems. Back in the day it was largely AD&D 2nd edition, Call of Cthulhu, Vampire and Deadlands. Recent years it was 3rd edition and we've been die hard Pathfinder 1st edition players since it...

Critical Role's 'Daggerheart' Open Playtest Starts In March

I certainly think that could be the issue. We have only had one game so far so it's still a learning curve. Our next game is in two weeks and I'll see what happens if I do go all out on them.

How Visible To players Should The Rules Be?

I think it comes down to a shift in the hobby. Over the last... let's say 20 years... there has been a shift from the traditional role-playing structure to newcomers into the hobby pushing what is referred to as Player Agency. The days of a groups sitting down and playing the game has been...

D&D General The D&D Cartoon is set in Faerun since when?

Back under the days of 2nd edition there were several one off comics written for D&D to showcase the settings. The Forgotten Realms issue had the kids all grown up but I think it was just a loose tie-in and not meant to say the cartoon was set there.

    Looking for something new

Have you looked at the Daggerheart play test? The PDF is fairly big but the rules are actually really simple and plays into exactly what you are looking at here. You can download for free, from Daggerheart.com

How Visible To players Should The Rules Be?

I get what you are saying but I would disagree. If you have a simple system like D&D5 it's fine to explain the mechanics of the game. If you have something like Pathfinder 1, then there is too much. A player can ask what is needed to do a certain action and they can learn during character...

How Visible To players Should The Rules Be?

I never tell them. It's information that they don't need to know. Keeps monsters scary and the characters on their toes.

How Visible To players Should The Rules Be?

We tend to say Physical at 50% HP and Critical at 10%. It was used that way by the Pathfinder Society group that we used to play with and it stuck with us.
