    Rules-Lite VS "Crunchy" TTRPG Systems

I started in the 80s with red box basic D&D, 1st edition, Call of Cthulhu and moved on into 2nd edition. All of these are what I consider rules light. Character creation is simple. There is no complexity to the game realistically. 2nd sort of went towards crunch with the Complete guides added...

How Visible To players Should The Rules Be?

Unless you have experienced players I prefer that players only know the basics. Learn the specific details as and when such situations come up in game. My reasoning for this is that I have had players, often new to the hobby, who read the rules and then try to game the system rather than use it...

Critical Role's 'Daggerheart' Open Playtest Starts In March

Nope. I don't think so. I tried to keep things lite on that front. We were doing actions with one roll and only when necessary. It was combat that generated the most which was why I was a little concerned that the second fight took too long.

Critical Role's 'Daggerheart' Open Playtest Starts In March

Yep but over the course of 3 hours actual gaming, rolls with fear were filling my pool up. The way I tried to look at it was that if I need the Fear tokens then I have them and that maybe I shouldn't be hung up on how many I have acumulated.

Critical Role's 'Daggerheart' Open Playtest Starts In March

We did our first playtest last night and here are my thoughts... The free flow role-play was great. Everyone got into it and it was nice to have dice dictate everything. Want to find those tracks and there's no danger, don't roll, just go with the narrative. That was an odd breath of fresh air...

Pathfinder 1E Are there compelling reasons to upgrade to PF1 from 3.0?

My group and I swapped over to Pathfinder pretty much as soon as it dropped. It fixes so many issues that 3.X had and gives a much more enjoyable game IMO. The power level does jump up from 3.x but it works. Paizo never managed to balance out grappling though. Even with Pathfinder, you need a...

Critical Role's 'Daggerheart' Open Playtest Starts In March

Agreed but bear in mind that this is just a play test of the main rules. I'm sure that we could easily see something like a DH Player's Guide which could include new classes similar to Monk, Cleric and Barbarian... etc. This is them working out the basics and then seeing what they can do with...

For anyone wanting to make their own cards, something like Magic Set Editor might be worth a look. You can easily make your own equivalent cards and print them out.

Critical Role's 'Daggerheart' Open Playtest Starts In March

So what are people running, scenario wise, for their play test? The quick start adventure feels a bit naff. I'm trying to put something together but struggling a little.

Critical Role's 'Daggerheart' Open Playtest Starts In March

From one reading and watching the preview videos on the Critical Role Youtube channel, the following are my thoughts. 1. It feels more rules light than D&D5. I was hoping for something between D&D and Pathfinder. Simple system but with more options. I don't think there are enough class...

I will be running the adventure this Sunday for my regular PF players. Got a lot to read first.

D&D General Social Pillar Mechanics: Where do you stand?

I'd roll play the situation out. If they can convince the NPC/s through that means then great. Otherwise I'd then go with something like a Diplomacy check with appropriate modifiers depending on how well or badly they put their case across.

D&D General How Do You Like Your In Person Tactical Setup?

Once upon a time, pre-3rd edition, I was all theatre of the mind, but these days I prefer a battle map and minis. But then I think combat these days needs to be more visual.

Evil Monster Ancestries - Yay or Nay?

I don't personally like playable monster races like Drow, Orcs and Goblins. In most campaign settings such races would not be seen as favourable or even neutral. If goblins or drow wandered into town, they would probably be run out of down or slain. They are seen as evil or as monsters by the...

What Mechanics or Systems Do You NEED?

The rules mechanics need to fit the style and feel of the campaign setting. As long as that fits, generally I'm all good. As an example... Dark Sun worked so well under the 2nd edition of AD&D. Attempts to play and run that setting under 3.X and PF have failed because the same overall feel and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Have A Thread of Veteran GM Advice

Several years ago I wrote a homebrew campaign for my Pathfinder group. The characters were just paying passengers on a merchants caravan/wagon heading towards a large city. The opening scene was the wagon ambushed by a highwayman and his bandit henchmen. I set the battle map up, placed the...

D&D General Backstories: good, bad or whatever?

I'm not a fan of character stories. I know... shock horror. They are nice for the player to have something to build upon for their character but for the most part, they are difficult to slot into a campaign especially one pre-written or published. Plus, you can't just do it for one player, it...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Have A Thread of Veteran GM Advice

I think it is because traditionally, role-playing game scenarios are designed to be a little rail-roady. It's generally get hired, go to the location, explore/do the job, come home and get paid. In a nutshell. Same with campaigns. My experience has been that when you go the sand box approach...
