D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Monster Manual: I think the really nice art detracts from the mediocre functionality of the book.

Also, the odds that DungeonScape will not include the option to list monsters by what criteria you select and to modify and save them in one spot is 0. The book is gorgeous and has lots of inspiration for DMs but at the table I would rather use digital tools that are easy to search than any...

    D&D 5E (2014) Amazon or Local?

I bought my books local and it has turned out to be a good thing: Pros: Got it early I like the store and want it to be there and stock D&D got 20% off for preordering When my PHB broke I just had to bring it in and got a replacement without any problem for free. Cons: Jeff...

    D&D 5E (2014) First Session of HotDQ - WOW, what a meatgrinder

I am playing a character in HotDQ so I am not reading this thread to avoid spoilage past the first paragraph but our group of 4 characters made it through the first section as level 1 characters and I think we only had one guy gt knocked unconscious. The only near death was the plot driven one...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D 5e death and consequences?

Everyone must learn the most important lesson of all: Don't let the DM roll a crit when you are at 1HP and never, ever be unlucky with saving throws. Only fools and bad players who deserve a spanking ever have the gall to be unlucky!

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D 5e death and consequences?

You can say that death is too easy to recover from (at higher levels, when starting out or as a commoner you pretty much always stay dead) but that is balanced against how often PCs die. Once players have resources to deal with death it is much less of a buzzkill to be attacking downed...

D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Monster Manual: I think the really nice art detracts from the mediocre functionality of the book.

I was really excited to rag on the book but those knuckleheads at WOTC went and added all this gorgeous art which really detracted from my griping. How about some consideration of MY feelings next time Wizards!!

D&D 5E (2014) The 5th edition PHB: Sorry but when it comes to functionality, it deserves a 'one star' rating.

The spells in 5e are shared more often than not. Listing them by class will involve tons of entries that say 'see page 54 in the wizard section for these three spells then page 16 in the clerics section for these other two' or complete repetition of the same information. Or you know, just list...

    D&D 5E (2014) Good news about DungeonScape

Yes this seems to be a real beta, as in a chance to test and find bugs, as opposed to a fake beta which is just marketing a product with free samples. If you are concerned that something you put in there might disappear someday, do not use it till it is officially released.

    D&D 5E (2014) Good news about DungeonScape

They have not said anything about iOS yet other than that the beta for that will continue. They previously said that they were more complete with the code on iOS already so I think they are on separate schedules.

D&D 5E (2014) The 5th edition PHB: Sorry but when it comes to functionality, it deserves a 'one star' rating.

Until they develop a way to hyperlink everything in the book and read multiple sections at once despite it being made of paper I think this is as good as it's going to get. I think its creation was predicated on the idea that in practice most people would be using a digital version of the...

D&D 5E (2014) Should monsters and NPCs have a crit confirm roll?

When I am playing, yes always. When I DM, no never.

    D&D 5E (2014) Does 5E NEED a campaign world book?

I dont have anything against golarion but I stopped buying the APs after the first one because it was rather specific to a world that did not fit well with mine. There is a lot to be said for a very colorful specific setting that provides a lot of hooks for stories but it does mean that someone...

    D&D 5E (2014) Good news about DungeonScape

http://www.dnddungeonscape.com/dungeonscape-beta-lets/ Looks like the web beta will begin soon. I'll be using iPad eventually but I am still looking forward to checking it out. I wonder if the payment system will be live in the beta or if it will all be unlocked?

D&D 5E (2014) I'm just sayin', the concentration mechanic makes it WAY easier to balance spells

I'm really liking the mechanic. So far, my buffing player is still getting a lot of bang for his spell slot buck and rarely fails the conc save. It does not take particularly long at the table because he knows to do it when he gets hit, and if he was getting hit a lot he'd be dead anyway...

D&D 5E (2014) Does WotC suck at selling games?

Very true, that DMG was the book I wish I had when I set out to DM 2nd edition way back in the day. I recently stated mothballing my 4e stuff and that book and the Dark Sun stuff is the only thing staying on my shelf.

D&D 5E (2014) Does WotC suck at selling games?

I admit I only skimmed about 20% of this giant wall o' text but it seemed typical for a game blog: high on personal option taken as fact and low on concrete useful information. Along the lines of 'I would be a better coach of the Packers because I would tell them to win games more' but with a...

D&D 5E (2014) Encounter Building math: or I killed 2 PCs last night.

I think the issue there is that the draft DM basic rules maps CR to Xp directly, meaning they are direct replacements for each other. But I believe that table is just supposed to be a guideline (and I don't think every monster in the MM follows the table, which is good) so if you make a new...

    D&D 5E (2014) Optimal Multiclassing

Sounds like the problem is you are trying to port from 3e where multiclassing was almost always more powerful than single classing to 5e where the two are more balanced without being willing to change your level progression. Instead of looking at doing the exact same thing and trying to get...

    D&D 5E (2014) Optimal Multiclassing

Look, it's not enough that the game allow my character concept to be created relatively easily in several different ways, it has to actively reward me such that what perfectly fits my RP idea also is perfectly Min/Maxed. I would also like the book to produce baked goods, but only gluten free...

    D&D 5E (2014) Sleep Spell 1st-Level, No-Save Death Spell?

With a 40ft diameter radius there are almost no encounters in the starter set for instance where it would hit any significant number of targets while not also being a threat to allies. Unless the DM is really bending over backwards to help the players it is only useful in limited situations...
