D&D 5E (2014) Easy Encounters? Don't take them for granted

I think the problem here is some people think Easy Encounter means you announce to the party "Ok, easy encounter time, half of you can take turns smoking while I waste your time and resources". In my experience running 5e the players don't know how easy an encounter is and because the...

D&D 5E (2014) Does anyone else find the arcane magic items in LMofP and in HoDQ over the top? (spoilers)

One of the interviews with Mearls about the starter he mentioned that most of the items were out of the way and rewarded exploration so groups would probably not get all of them. In this case, I don't know if I would write it that way. Not that it's wrong but usually when planning items I am...

D&D 5E (2014) Humans RAW Can Start With multiple 18's

But how will I publicly demonstrate my manifest genius without designing extremely literal rule interpretations that lend to some minor mechanical benefit that I can declare broken? As the Acquisitions Incorporated game from this weekend showed the thing that makes a D&D game great is...

    D&D 5E (2014) My PHB smells...

    Smells like... victory.

D&D 5E (2014) Does anyone else find the arcane magic items in LMofP and in HoDQ over the top? (spoilers)

I suppose it depends on the group. Those who compulsively look for hidden things or scout ahead and happen on the right path have a pretty good chance to get it.

D&D 5E (2014) I for one hope we don't get "clarification" on many things.

That's far too reasonable, we need at least another 50 pages of increasingly precise jargon and intentional obfuscation until we can even begin to get to the not-bottom of whatever the topic is anymore.

D&D 5E (2014) Humans RAW Can Start With multiple 18's

Rolling does not help or hurt any race more than any other race. In my group there are level 1s with 20s. They will be better than usual for the early levels but I would be surprised if anyone at the table does not have maxed primary stats pretty quickly. Personally I am going to use the card...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's list the "broken" spells

Nobody* plays D&D alone. Even mildly optimized level 18 parties are going to be handing out advantage to each other like valentines candy. This spell is just the capstone one that saves you having to cast a greater invis, faerie fire, Guiding Bolt, True Strike, and every hold, stun, snare...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's list the "broken" spells

That does sound nice, but I think at high level play there is going to be a ton of advantage for the having for a lot of classes.

D&D 5E (2014) Does anyone else find the arcane magic items in LMofP and in HoDQ over the top? (spoilers)

I had a similar impression, at least from phandelver. It seems like the new rules for magic items should be that players have no way to tell how many charges the item has or how many it recharges every day. Just that it stops workign for the day, and eventually stops working forever...

    D&D 5E (2014) Magic Item design?

I don't know about that, weapons are only going up to +3 and high level spells already kick butt significantly. A high level wizards fireball may be saved against more often than a high level fighters sword swing misses, but the fireball still has the ability to put out a ton of damage.

    D&D 5E (2014) Druid 20 = Infinite Hit Points

It sounds like a significant nerf to the druid at every level up to 20, which are the ones where you most likely will actually be playing, to confront a theoretical issue at level 20. When you have 2 wildshapes part of your toolbox is the ability to shapechange twice and get a new HP pool both...

D&D 5E (2014) What do players spend their treasure on?

Even in low magic systems/campaigns you can still trade in magic items. The difference is you better have money, a lot of money. And that sort of wealth.. it can attract the wrong sort.

    D&D 5E (2014) Druid 20 = Infinite Hit Points

The way I read the rules you need to use a bonus action to change into your shape and one to change back to normal. I would rule that you can't change from one animal to another without switching back to normal. So while you would have infinite HP in some situations, you would always have one...

D&D 5E (2014) My interview with Trapdoor Technologies about DungeonScape

As they said, it will run as a web-app as well so it should not be very limited by device at all. Just in how pretty it is.

D&D 5E (2014) Can you retry a failed skill check? How long?

Look at how the 4e save mechanic that was partially imported into 5e dealt with duration. Rather than roll 1d4+1 for how long the debuff lasts the target gets a save each turn, statistically the result is similar. I can think of fun instances where a skill check can work in a similar way. The...

D&D 5E (2014) I for one hope we don't get "clarification" on many things.

Have you ever noticed that almost 0 CRPGs and MMOs have any sort of stealth that is not just magic invisibility? DDO had a light based system but it was still super vague and magical. Even games that are all about stealth have very unnatural limitations built in. The reason is that stealth is...

    D&D 5E (2014) Warlock: Best Designed Caster?

They seem fun. I am more concerned with which is more fun to play than build though.
