You are not readying the spell, it has already been cast and you are concentrating on it. you are readying the magic action required to break the enchantment. There is nothing lost if circumstances preclude you using this magic action (other than your action).

With short rest recharge and Armor of Agathys I don't see them as particularly fragile. It is not as tanky as some fighters, Paladins and Bladesingers but it is more than adequate. Also I think most hard melee bladelocks are going to be running armor of shadows.

Since Divine Smite is now a spell, you can use pact slots to cast it. This makes Paladin-Warlock multiclasses quite a bit better than they were.

I think agonizing Truestrike works better than Pact of Blade for a bladelock at most levels. The flat +3/4/5 and extra cantrip damage dice keep up fairly close with extra attack, you get scaling at 5, 11 and 17 and you only need one invocation for it.

There are over 300 forgotten realms novels, dozens of forgotten realms adventures, at least three previous source books and I don't think there has been an amethyst dragon in any one of them. It is very obscure.
