D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

I think the original ban against clerics using edged weapons comes from the Beayux Tapestry.

    D&D General Stretching Bounded Accuracy?

Personally I am not a fan of that. I think the current bounded accuracy values are pretty good, but if I was going to do it I would go the other way, lowering proficiency bonus. I think abilities, magic and other options can reduce hits or reduce damage or both, but I like the idea that a 1st...

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

But a dropped PC never stays dropped. Healing Word and bonus action poitons of healing basically ensures that even if they don't have things like Relentless Endurance, Death Ward or Contingency. Poor initiative is easily overcome unless you can down ALL of the PCs in one round

Wizards of the Coast Head Explains Benefits to D&D Franchise Model

I personally like playing in person better, but I think online play really works a lot better for many introverted players. There are a lot of players that enjoy the anonymity that you can get in online play, a lot of them won't even turn on their camera when playing. I think some of this also...

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

The Rangers I play all use official rules, but since the 2024 rules came out they all end up getting Truestrike, Shield, Green-Flame Blade and Wrathful Smite. For a Ranged weapon they are usually using a Heavy Crossbow with Truestrike or throwing a weapon with Truestrike+Wrathful Smite...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

Single class Assasin PCs were not common in games I played, but Half-Orc Fighter/Assasins were very common. They tried the "oh I am a fighter/thief" but the issue they ran into was Half-Orc was the only race with a level cap on thief, and the only one besides human with no level cap on Assasin...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

The irony is Assasins could use any weapons, but they were still limited on what weapons they could backstab with.

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

So we used a custom initiative which worked well with Segments. We rolled a 1d10 for initiative and then added speed factor or casting time to determine what initiative your attack or spell happened on. It made spell casters and especially spells with short casting times significantly more...

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

Ranger is my favorite class. If you want to get rid of something get rid of Druid or Barbarian. I have also never played a Ranger who was a skirmisher. Most of the Rangers I play are high-magic casters first, fill in/second string martials second.

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

These are all the things I mentioned that cause a TPK ... and that is not what we are talking about here. We are talking about the margin being "razor thin" when these things are not the case. When the party is not making poor decissions, when they do not have bad rolls, when they are not...

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

I agree and a DM can always cause a TPK if that is what we want. What we are talking about here is a DM who does NOT want to do that, but it accidentally happens, and not because the party makes a bad decision but rather because the DM designed a monster poorly. I think the rules are...

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

Ok I am not sure how far back you looked at this thread, so let me clarify what you are claiming here: 1. As a DM you tried to design an encounter that would be high difficulty and might kill one or more PCs but would not cause a TPK. 2. You made mistakes creating custom monsters for this...

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

Ok so it was a problem 10 years ago but is no longer a problem? Also when you say "playing" do you mean as a player? If so then what you learned is not really relevant to this because we are talking about DMs creating custom monsters. No they don't because monsters that are not homebrew come...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

You zip pretty quickly if you are in an 8th level party getting experience designed for 8th level. Your next 4 encounters probably all get you a level.

    D&D General 6E But A + Thread

Those abilities were all over the place though. Get hit by a Wight and lose a level ... permenantly and you can expect to start running into Wights at around level 4. Get hit by a Ghoul and fail the saving throw and you were paralyzed for the rest of the fight. Miss your save against a...

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

I don't think they will often result in a TPK unless the DM is purposely trying to kill a party. You say it can easily result in a TPK, how many of those have you seen in play and more importantly how many that you saw were due to a custom monster more powerful than the DM thought and not one...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

It is true for your Thief levels, but it is not true for your Bard levels. Bard was not a dual class and your Bard hit dice are in addition to your Fighter and Thief Hit Dice

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

Going strictly RAW the way for a Half-Elf Bard is the Reincarnate spell. You start out as a Human do 5-7 levels of Fighter, then dual class to thief then at some point before becoming a Bard Reincarnate into a half-Elf. Then you would be a Dual Class Fighter/Thief and could eventually become...
