How to handle adventuring loot outside of a strong economy?

I highly recommend Grain Into Gold when wrestling with 'real' costs of things and an agrarian economy. From the description on Drive Thru RPG: I have no affiliation, just a fan. I might add that you consider why can't the natives have rudimentary knowledge of metal working. Metal working was...

Playtest (A5E) Level Up Playtest Document #6: Sorcerer

@Jessica Wolfman to each their own. My gaming group has had this discussion more than once and the consensus among us is that sorcerers as charisma casters are a lame cop-out. That's just our table and our preferences.

    D&D General Single class party?

I've wanted to run a Heist/Thieves Guild one shot for a while, however, they don't all have to be rogues. I think it would be a blast to have a series of one-shots where each one is an adventure with a different single class party.

D&D General Do you allow "crossplaying" at your table? Has it ever caused problems?

I can't imagine restricting what gender a player chooses for their character. Even in this instance. I would more likely restrict who is at the table. Disruptive or cringy players don't get invited back.

Playtest (A5E) Level Up Playtest Document #6: Sorcerer

I was really hoping for a non-charisma caster. Why not constitution? Don't give me the tired excuse about doubling down on Con, the sorcerer only gets d6 for hit dice.

D&D 5E (2014) Becoming prisoners without removing player agency (OotA)

@DM Dave1 in one of his older videos I recall Colville talking about the problems with taking the party prisoner. One of the reasons I'm hesitant to try it. I haven't had a chance to watch that newest video yet, but I will. Its still a few sessions away, but the way I look at it now, if they...

D&D 5E (2014) Becoming prisoners without removing player agency (OotA)

I worded that poorly. What I meant was if they accept the mission to go to the underdark - I've decided that they need to rescue a leader of the 'drow resistance' - but then decide that they're going to storm the prison against the advice of the quest giver. Or some other similar scenario which...

D&D 5E (2014) Becoming prisoners without removing player agency (OotA)

I'm pretty sure this is how I'm going to play it. If they take the job, then the next session begins with them in prison. If there is discussion among the players about alternate strategies, I may play out the ambush, because the players will have made it clear they don't really want to play a...

D&D General Most common NPC/sidekick for a party

My group is small - fighter, rogue, ranger. They learned early on that they were kinda short on healing. This was about the same time the Sidekicks UA came out and I shared it with the party. Not thinking, as a throwaway encounter while they set up camp, a bear walked into their camp and asked...

D&D 5E (2014) Becoming prisoners without removing player agency (OotA)

@iserith That is a possibility, but if I end the session with them being offered the mission (and huge sums of gold to take it), they can take it or not. If they take the job all is good - they can travel to the underdark, meet the patrol from the garrison and surrender to them. If they...

D&D 5E (2014) Becoming prisoners without removing player agency (OotA)

I can have the main mission to be make contact with someone inside the outpost, whether that is a member of the garrison or a prisoner (probably a prisoner). The quest giver can state flatly, "get captured & make contact" There is no need to risk leaving it to the dice if they follow the plan.

D&D 5E (2014) Becoming prisoners without removing player agency (OotA)

Damn! See, this is why I made the post. I had never thought of the "get captured" angle. Perhaps the garrison at Velkynvelve has a person or object key to the mission. BTW, they are being sent to the underdark by a drow dissident and outcast who wants to create a sanctuary for drow who want to...

D&D 5E (2014) Becoming prisoners without removing player agency (OotA)

I have had Out of the Abyss sitting on my shelf, unused and gathering dust. I'd like to get some value out of it, so after the party finishes the next couple of tasks, they be sent to the underdark. I have some hooks worked out and I'm pretty sure they'll bite - the ranger has underdark as a...
