D&D 5E (2014) Respect Mah Authoritah: Thoughts on DM and Player Authority in 5e

Good article! I've got a question though. I agree that it's kind of expected that players have authority over their characters. But I can't help but think that they don't have authority over some facets of it. For example, what do they character know? It happens very often in my sessions that...

D&D 5E (2014) FeeFiFoFum *splat* goes the giants

That's also my experience. Most players I've DMed for, veterans or newcomers, had no interest in optimizing. They focused on making choices that made sense for the character they had in mind. They are concerned about making bad choices though.

The COWBOY BEBOP RPG Is Coming Next Year

I backed a kickstarter project called Orbital Blue. It gave me a similar vibe and I always felt that the genre of Cowboy Bebop would be excellent for RPGs. Even now I'd probably go with Orbital Blue, as others mentioned, the genre is interesting but I feel like Cowboy Bebop itself doesn't have...

D&D 5E (2014) (Poll) I play 5e, and there are X players at the table.

I won't go lower than three players (except in special circumstances, like a fun impromptu one-shot). My sweet number is four. Six is the max I'll play with.

    D&D 5E (2014) What's really useful on a DM screen?

Same with me. I'd add things like lifestyle prices, prices for meals, inns and stuff like that. I generally always have them on a sheet of paper somewhere.

D&D 5E (2014) FeeFiFoFum *splat* goes the giants

It was relevant as a response to something @Ancalagon wrote. It was not an argument for or against the encounter building rules. Because your level 4 players did not defeat two ancient dragons. That's an hyperbole.

D&D 5E (2014) FeeFiFoFum *splat* goes the giants

How is this even relevant to what anyone said? You're just throwing hyperboles. Nobody mentioned anything of the sort here. I don't know why that's being brought up.

D&D 5E (2014) FeeFiFoFum *splat* goes the giants

What you quoted wasn't an argument as to the encounter rules being good or bad. It was simply to tell Ancalagon that I don't think three giants against a level 7 party will be much of a challenge when two of them were defeated by a party of level 4.

D&D 5E (2014) FeeFiFoFum *splat* goes the giants

The encounter building works pretty well at lower levels. But it completely falls apart at later levels when monsters start to get increasingly powerful abilities, and your players start dishing out exponentially more damage while the monsters HP are not as high. Barely a few hours my party of...

D&D General Do you prefer more or less Skills?

Compared to 5E, I'd say a few more. I miss skills like Culture, and Streetwise from 4E. But I would absolutely not explode Athletics into Running, Jumping and swimming. On a side note, it blew my mind how Symbaroum doesn't have skills. It's one of the pieces I took for granted because of the...

In Defence of Chickens - DCC RPG (OOC)

Sorry, but I'm gonna have to sit this one out. Things are pretty crazy at work and I can't check these boards on a regular schedule. It'll probably be back to normal in a couple of weeks.

    D&D 5E (2014) Handling player-found books

Hi! This is something that came up is almost, if not all of my campaigns, and I never quite found a satisfactory way to approach it. What happens is that, either because it fits the character, the story or the environment in which they are, a player will ask to look around for interesting book...

RPG Print News – Goodman Games, Modiphius, Monte Cook Games, and More

Brancalonia sounds interesting. Maybe I'll get the setting book just for inspiration and reading.

D&D 5E (2014) DMing help: Random potions scenario

That's a good idea! I'll go over my list of effects and see if I can somewhat easily make it work. I was having the same thought process as you; but the wax seal is a great idea. It really communicates something that should be sealed. A deck of cards would be super cool! I don't have time to...

D&D 5E (2014) DMing help: Random potions scenario

Hi! I don't see many threads about DMing, asking for feedback or ideas, but I thought why not! I'm designing a short dungeon for my group for next weekend. They'll make their way into the demiplane hideout of a reclusive wizard that's now made from solitude. I've put in several different type...

What would you pay for a book?

It depends. The Ravenloft 5E book is currently 29 USD which with the conversion rate should equal about 35-36 CAD. I payed around 45 for it at launch. For a bigger book, like the Zweihander book, it's currently 30 USD (seems to be in special) and which converts to 37 CAD. It's currently 55 CAD...

    Big book or multiple smaller?

It depends on a few things. If it's one big book of 800 pages crammed with everything, it's interesting, but it's very heavy and irritating to bring around. Also, you buy the book and you don't get to choose what interests you. Personally, I would rather have multiple smaller books. One for...

What would you pay for a book?

    a) Between 20-30 (15-23 USD). But I rarely buy softcovers. b) Around 45-60 (35-47 USD) c) Around 60-75 CAD (47-60 USD) d) I don't buy PDFs. And for some reason, I can't pay much for a PDF. It just feels wrong to it. I use them when they're included with the core rulebook, if not I don't buy...
