Who can be a superior archer-extraordinaire: A Ranger or Fighter?

I would say Fighter. You've got more feats, in a faster progression than a Ranger. Plus, you could develop alternate abilities with those spare feats. Also, you won't be wasting any class features on woodsy stuff - which a Ranger does.

Hide in shadows/Hide in Plain sight

After numerous problems with this class, I've pretty much just removed it from my game. Several of my players have had argument after arguement over this ability and the Shadow Jump ability. The player in question made the arguement (continously) that there are always shadows, no matter what...

    Roll-playing, is it utterly condemnatory?

I think what I said in the thread about Complete Divine really sums up what's bothering me:

    Roll-playing, is it utterly condemnatory?

The problem with that, from my perspective, is that the market is now catering to your style - to the complete exclusion of the role-players. That leaves those of us who don't like power-gaming out in the cold. If we're playing cops-n-robbers, then the industry is only producing new products...

    Roll-playing, is it utterly condemnatory?

I have said nearly those exact words before! I do loath the fact that all we get from published materials is more "crunch" and no "flavor". This of course is a business decision - and I can see why. It does seem however, that those of us who knew an earlier, more story-focused gaming...

    Roll-playing, is it utterly condemnatory?

While it's true your character probabaly caused the other players some annoyance, it didn't totally invalidate an entire aspect of the game for them. Just because you were a little more talky doesn't keep them from also being talky, or smashing things. However, if you introduce a character...

    Roll-playing, is it utterly condemnatory?

From my experience, he would probably not use the killer combos to their most effective. Not intentionally, mind you - he would most likely "do what the character would do". If that means bashing the guy who swung at you last (even if there is a more effective method or jucier target) then so...

    Roll-playing, is it utterly condemnatory?

I believe I know why power-gamers are continually at odds with role-players. If you have a group of role-players, their characters will not be "maxed out" for fighting only - they will usually have attempted to duplicate a "real" person. Some fighty, some knowledge, some resources just spent...

    Roll-playing, is it utterly condemnatory?

This book also seems a bit suspect to me... Perhaps it's because it doesn't really mesh with my idea of what my RPG (as the DM) should be. If I'm spending all of my free time trying to build a living, breathing world - with "real" people who aren't perfect versions of an ideal - then I would...

    My DM, co-player conundrum

As a DM, I've usually got my hands full playing every other person in the world. I can't see why I'd want to add another NPC with the party just to steal some of their thunder too. That's not to say there aren't NPCs in the party - there have been. They were played by other players. There...

    D&D 101: A lesson in fun

2nd Edition. :) I can remember my first DMing forays in early in 2nd edition. Judging monsters was a dangerous proposition if you had never used the monster before, or had never played against it. If you weren't careful, it's special abilities could fly under the radar and really cause some...

    D&D 101: A lesson in fun

We also agree here. Now, I wouldn't intentionally oppose my players with a monster that is too far above their ability - although there are many that are. Usually, when they wander by accident into an area where they shouldn't be, they'll get signals - and it's their job to correctly interpret...

    D&D 101: A lesson in fun

Bah. From my DMing experience, the whole CR or EL thing is more art than science. You can debate mathematical theories for this and that, statistics for the other or whatever... but it comes down to what your party can and can't do. Example: My party consists of four 20th level PCs...

Do Ray Spells suffer -4 "Firing into Melee" penalty?

Then by extention, Point Blank Shot and it's decendants apply to rays... Since I'm about to play a Raymage, that sounds neat...

What Happens when a Fire Elemental is Dropped in Water?

As a DM, I would agree with those who say the fire elemental would take damage from the water, as his body cools. However, I wouldn't go to the extreme that others have - I would treat the water as the opposite of fire - 1d6 per round. If you set a man (90% water!) on fire, by the rules he...

Question about the Domain Wizards in Unearthed Arcana

IMC I replaced the regular wizard with the domain wizard just after UA came out. I've found very little balance issue, despite (or perhaps because) my party is 20th-21st level. I've found that since the spell lists are limited, and the bonus spell and +1 CL only apply to the limited list...

Heighten Spell + another Metamagic feat

:) Well, I did try to be nice. At least, nicer than Thanee's post. -Which is exactly my point. Allowing the stacking of Heighten with other metamagic feats wouldn't be unbalancing IMHO. The Sage's response, while "official", is unsatisfying. The text of the feat says one thing, but the...

Heighten Spell + another Metamagic feat

*tap* *tap* *tap* Is this thing on? Yes I realize that the Sage said that it shouldn't work that way. Finally, someone was able to point to an official source instead of just saying, "No! Because I said!" I made that concession several posts up. They were interesting, you should maybe read...

    Tornado Evocation

Reason #1087 to not allow just any product with a d20 logo in your game. "My magic tornado just hurts bad guys! <snicker>" As a rule, I do not allow any product that I do not own, or I have not read thoroughly. Not all d20 products are compatable with every game...

Heighten Spell + another Metamagic feat

Actually, my campaign doesn't allow sorcerers. The campaign started back in 2e, and for consistancy, they don't exist. Second, I do think that the cost of Heighten (it still takes one of your precious feats) is worth the sometimes marginal gain you might get from it. In order to use it most...
