True Seeing vs Mindblank + Polymorph

So, let's say you're a dragon, and you've decided to trick some bothersome do-gooders. Your plan is to polymorph into a harmless dwarf and cast Mindblank on yourself to keep out prying spells that might uncover your ruse. Then along comes the adventurers - and one of them has True Sight...

Creating items from spells you don't know

So am I correct in reading that under 3.5 you cannot create an item that requires a spell you cannot cast? Even when another person can cast it? Am I recalling correctly that under 3.0 you could create an item (like Amulet of Natural Armor) with the wizard providing the feats and XP and the...

SR: You don't have to lower it after all?

+1 level for SR? Under what circumstances would you do this? If SR was granted as part of a class feature, or by an item? When the spell is cast? I can't imagine any other circumstances for this, because I would imagine that a class with SR built in would have already figured that into...

How do you handle campaign history knowledge?

I have a fairly rich homebrew campaign that I run, and background/history is very important. First off, I'm actually running the second campaign set in this world - the first ended some 1500 years ago. However, there is still one PC playing who was alive then (he's effectively immortal) so...

    D&D 3.x Casting Defensivly - 3.5 rules

I suppose I was looking at it from a perspective of "How good is the bad guy with his big stick/claws/axe/whatever". The difficulty of the DC comes from the strength of the encounter. The ability to overcome the DC comes from the player, in the form of his skill and stats. Guys who are good...

    D&D 3.x Casting Defensivly - 3.5 rules

As for why 9th level is the point where casting defensively no longer really matters, here's the basis: Skill ranks: +12 Con: +2 (or more, if you've got access to Create Wonderous Items. And who makes a wizard with a bad Con? You've only got a d4 for Hps!) Casting Defensively: +4 Die roll...

    D&D 3.x Casting Defensivly - 3.5 rules

The standard cast defensivly is just 15+spell - which is an awful mechanic once your players are past 9th level or so. I houseruled the DC to be the monster's normal to-hit + spell level. So like a basic orc would add like +3 or 4 (for his BAB and STR) to the spell level - for a 10th level...

    Advanced monsters and Caster levels

IMC, I'm in need of an advanced Slaadi, a Death one, advanced to CR 20. I understand I could simply advance the HD up to 20, but I would like to give him 5 levels of sorcerer in order to get him access to extra spells, and for the SR penetration and Dispel checks. In the MM, it clearly...

    Dispel Magic vs Summoned Monster

Am I correct in thinking that a Dispel Magic spell targeted against a summoned monster has a chance (after the dispel check) to just *poof* the monster away? What about area effect Dispel Magic uses? Thanks for your help!

    Do YOU have "personal" dice?

Private dice? Oh yeah. I don't even let my dice play other games. :) I've got a set for DMing, a set for playing D&D, one for Chez Geek (a card/dice game), one for my Warhammer 40k Harlequin army, one for my WH40k Tau army, one for my Eldar BFG army, one for GURPS, one for Star Trek RPG, an...

    Paranoia D20?

I miss playing Paranoia! Two of my favorite R&D items was a set of solar powered night-vison goggles (which, incedently killed the wearer when one of the bots used his 10 million candlepower spotlight to power the set) and a medbot built from a recycled Vulture Combot. It really attacked those...

    Antimagic vs. DR

During last night's game, a situation arose in which a Pit Fiend was hit with an Antimagic Ray (from the Dragonomicon - basically it's an antimagic sphere which only effects the targeted creature). The spell clearly states that all spells, SU and SP abilities no longer function for or against...

Unearthed Arcana Variant Rules - Previews and Questions

IMC we use a "more lethal" variant for falling: in addition to the standard damage there is a Fort save or die (DC=2 per 10 feet fallen). When you combine this with the option that forces you to keep rolling when you roll a 1 (or a 20) even 20th level barbarians (with some really REALLY bad...

    Bonus Spells and Enhancement Bonuses

Thanks for all your help! My players appreciate it, and I do too. I wonder why that isn't in the books somewhere. It's odd that the spell the item is based on doesn't do it, but an item made with that spell does. Huh.

    Bonus Spells and Enhancement Bonuses

So, there seems to be some debate in my group as to whether or not an Enhancement bonus (specifically from a headband of intellect) changes the number of bonus spells you get. I ruled no, since the bonus doesn't apply to skill points. It seems to me that skill points and bonus spells should...

    How would you handle this?

I disagree with the idea that players "can't" do any of these things before init has been rolled. Are you the DM in this situation? Here's how I would handle it: First: Was the approaching party planning on attacking the players? If so, the DM knows this and should act accordingly. Let's...

Tell players target save DCs or let them sweat?

I generally just tell them to make a save, of whatever variety. Giving the DCs is no fun, and it can ruin the sense of drama, especially when they have a fairly small chance of failure. As for AC, I don't give that out either, but usually after a few rounds they'll nail it.

    D&D 3.x 3.0 Weapon Master balanced in 3.5?

In contrast to that, I've banned that PrC altogether. If you allow crit stacking, it's easily possible (especially at higher levels) to create damage output in excess of what's possible with 9th level spells - in a single round. This I can tell you from personal experience. Of course, if you...
