D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage"

Well, level 4 (Twisted Caverns) has this thing where an aboleth is killing off the fish in the river, and the "Aftermath" section says that if the PCs don't get rid of the aboleth, the fungus forests will die off too, "destroying the delicate ecosystem". Maybe they want PCs to kill the aboleth...

D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage"

Well, level 5 has a somewhat crazy archdruid (Wyllow) and her ally, a good-aligned green dragon merged with an intelligent magical sword.

Vecna v Acererak v Larloch? Who's The Most Powerful Lich?

That does seem odd, unless they have a specific reason. I mean, there are several other established situations like that in D&D, but they have purposes. Acererak builds death-trap tombs as a way to accumulate souls from foolhardy adventurers, for example. IIRC it's at least strongly implied...

(5e) Should Rogues be able to sneak attack with all light weapons?

I think sneak attack with big weapons might be an issue at low levels (1st-4th), when base weapon damage matters more, and Extra Attack hasn't come into play yet. One game I played in, the rogue consistently dealt significantly more damage than the fighter in this level range.

Aquatic creatures: Saltwater vs. Freshwater list, what if one enters the other?

I would probably assume Sea Hags are sufficiently supernatural to not have to care about adapting, since hags are fey. Merrow might be the same way, because of abyssal mutation; if they can survive in the seas of Demogorgon's abyssal layer, I'm not sure freshwater/saltwater is going to matter...

Where do the 'Mordenkainen's Tome' Elder Evils come from?

Page 237 of Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes (Star Spawn entry) has a long list of Elder Evils. Dendar the Night Serpent and Kezef the Chaos Hound are from FR, I believe. Tharizdun the Elder Elemental Eye is Greyhawk. I think the Queen of Chaos is from "The Rod of Seven Parts". From 3E Elder Evils...

Vecna v Acererak v Larloch? Who's The Most Powerful Lich?

Sounds right. Vecna's avatar form in "Die Vecna Die" would probably win against Dregoth due to its defenses (100% MR, psionics immunity, automatically makes saves against foes without a Vecna relic), though Dregoth might be able to beat him down through pure physical damage. Vecna with access to...

Vecna v Acererak v Larloch? Who's The Most Powerful Lich?

And what about Dregoth [from Dark Sun*]? Not actually a god, but that's only because godhood isn't actually possible to attain on Athas. His 2E stats are absolutely crazy. Unfortunately, 2E didn't stat gods, so he might or might not be stronger than Vecna... but still: AC -8, 173 hit points...

Vecna v Acererak v Larloch? Who's The Most Powerful Lich?

Azalin is a big fish in his small pond of Ravenloft, but he doesn't really compare on this scale -- IIRC he's 18th level (in 2e), and as his curse is that he can't learn any new magic, he can't advance. So he's really not comparable with anyone 20th-level-plus, much less a demigod/god like...

Crowdfunded RPG pdfs/books, is there enough interest?

I actually think there's a good bit of room to build on with 5E. I've been playing around with some ideas since I'm currently DMing a game that is likely to eventually bring in Advanced Beings (from Dark Sun) and I think it could work pretty well at those levels (which IMO are about equivalent...

Interesting Low Epic ideas and campaign hooks.

Well, there's a couple of different ways you could approach them... If you assume Diablo levels are equivalent to D&D levels, well then, you're probably talking low 20s for D1 Diablo and mid-high 30s (?) for D2 Diablo (at normal difficulty). In terms of cosmic significance... I'd say their...

Worlds of Design: How Would You Design For Spelljammer?

IIRC, there was a bit in a very old Dragon magazine (maybe in the Forum section) suggesting that this is WHY so many huge, sprawling underground complexes exist in the D&D world - a Moria type underground city is a lot less vulnerable to aerial fire. (Not with reference to spelljamming ships...

Worlds of Design: How Would You Design For Spelljammer?

It is kind of weird, but I imagine it like the existence of interstellar travel in Gene Wolfe's "Book of the New Sun" - it exists, and at least some educated people on Earth who aren't directly involved with it have some knowledge of its existence (and there are bits of high tech and alien...

What would Unicron from Transformers be?

IIRC Unicron is supposed to exist on multiple parallel universes at once which would suggest he's at least a First One (multiple planes associated with one dimension) or possibly an Eternal (multiple dimensions comprising one Reality). Neutronium Golems are Eternal-built constructs and they are...

D&D 5E (2014) What does the titan subtype mean?

Ah, OK, thanks. I guess they have some lingering spark of divinity which mortal creations of the gods and powerful non-divine fiends and celestials don't.

More Info On Frank Mentzer's Worlds of Empyrea

jedijon: "Empyrea" appears to be more likely derived from "empyrean" (meaning celestial or fiery, or the highest heaven) rather than "empirical".

D&D 5E (2014) What does the titan subtype mean?

It seems to apply to creatures created by the gods... but in the default 5E cosmology, weren't most of the mortal races created by the gods (orcs by Gruumsh etc.)? Does it mean those creatures are ageless and don't reproduce, so the krakens or empyreals you meet are the very first ones ever?

    5E musings

I think that's been changed for 5E -- the description in Out of the Abyss says "Yeenoghu's lair in the Abyss is called the Death Dells, its barren hills and ravines serving as one great hunting ground, where he pursues captured mortals in a cruel game" and "there are few structures or signs of...

    5E musings

They're mostly described as a weird palace or city, with the exception of Juiblex and Yeenoghu who don't really seem to have actual structures. It isn't terribly clear in some cases - I'm not 100% sure whether Orcus's lair is meant to be just the palace or the whole city of Naratyr (probably...
