Dislike 4E? You can write off 5E

Look, it's straight from the horse's mouth, if this isn't just rumour, and I was hoping for a departure from the 4E design philosophy, not an evolution or refinement, and that's what he's effectively saying it won't be (a departure). It's understandable from a business standpoint; I'm sure...

Dislike 4E? You can write off 5E

Thought this needed a thread of it's own. No end to the schism, it seems, and no hope of joining a current edition for the foreseeable future if you don't like the cut of 4E's jib. No need for me to check out the 5E books now. :(

Has the horse left the barn?

The same people are still in charge for 5E. So much for 5E. :(

Has the horse left the barn?

For me, 4E isn't part of the D&D universe. I can't suspend my disbelief for a default setting of dragonpeople and teleport elves everywhere plus whatever else enters the everything-is-core, and the awkward retcons attempted to shoehorn 4E into FR and GH I think prove that 4E has special needs...

What defines the "edition war" and why are participants / moderators opposed to them?

Yes, you can view D&D purely as a branded money-making mechanism, just as you can view it as something bigger than that. I suspect that the core of the D&D phenomenon is slowly divorcing itself from the D&D brand, as the schism created by 4E and the advent of Pathfinder and myriad tiny...

What defines the "edition war" and why are participants / moderators opposed to them?

How about facetiousness in order to make a point, then? Do you loathe that too? Might want to spellcheck it before loathing it, for that matter. (And I think that Gary was right when he said that hypocrisy was a mere canard, unjustly elevated to the level of a sin. Every parent and boss is a...

What defines the "edition war" and why are participants / moderators opposed to them?

You're trying real hard to make me look like the aggressor, here, when I was simply delivering a rebuttal. Go talk to Paradox about his philosophy of assigning "base motives" to others he doesn't agree with and the finer points of calling people "jerks" because of that.

What defines the "edition war" and why are participants / moderators opposed to them?

I don't want to be a game designer. And "jerk" is Paradox's word, so I was using language he'd understand. It is, as I pointed out, a great word to dismiss and dehumanise people who you don't want to see the perspective of or give any legitimacy to. A useful emotional shorthand for bigotry...

What defines the "edition war" and why are participants / moderators opposed to them?

That's a cute way to dismiss folks who simply think the designers were jerks for doing what they did with something they cared about. But it certainly reframes reality in a convenient way for your perspective, I'll give you that.

    New Realms = Old School

Okay, this is nonsense. Take it from someone who ran Ruins of Adventure (the module version of Pool of Radiance) adapted to 3E, and scythed away many encounters - you have no hope of running this style of campaign in 4E because the combats take far too long to resolve in that system. 4E is not...

    New Realms = Old School

Agreed. Hexes do not oldschool make, and regardless of it being OSR or not I hate what was done with 4E FR. Handsome map though, nice work.

    sandbox campaign - map size/scale?

Along with hexes, another good cheat for sandboxes is to use geomorphs for urban areas. The Lankhmar: City of Adventure book had them, as does the dungeon magazine with the adventure Goblin Fever in it. This way, you can detail a geomorph or eight, flip them round and change the names of NPCs...

    sandbox campaign - map size/scale?

Not really seeing it. Hill of stones is hex 2301, scale-back ridge hexes 1302, 1402 and 1503 etc. and has the advantage of encouraging such detail if you use a small enough scale per hex. 1306 has a magic well, 1709 hollowed trees with corpses in them, 1611 a statue in a creek with a hidden...

    sandbox campaign - map size/scale?

Talk about throwing the baby out with the bathwater. So for sake of someone mistakenly thinking they've properly explored an area, dispose of the most powerful device available for making sure discrete areas of wilderness end up containing something of interest? I use numbered half mile...

[Those who like 4ed] What has been lost?

Maybe if you're using 8 players and miniatures. Look, even Throne of Bloodstone doesn't play this slow. A "session and a half" for 1E combat is IME completely unheard of, ever, and 15 minutes being "a rare low" strains credulity.

    Good, general purpose, campaign software?

No generators in it, but I recommend Zulupad if you want to make a campaign wiki. It's like notepad gone wiki, and has replaced MyInfo for me in terms of campaign, setting and adventure design. Just highlight a word you want to make a wiki hyperlink, click the "link" icon, and it makes a new...

    Need adventure suggestions

The Lost Sentinel from Tall Tales of the Wee Folk. It's the best fairytale adventure in D&D IMO. Also, if it's kids, consider using Dungeon Squad!, which is much more accessible for younger kids than D&D, whilst still hitting the same notes.

I guess I really do prefer simplicity

A few observations: The AD&D/BECMI Fighter is the "gambler's class", in that no other class rolls the d20 or the damage die more. This can retain interest, especially when combined with collecting magic items to power that up. Raid Encyclopedia Magica for powerups, or include Weapon Mastery...

    Which edition to play

I'd suggest Rules Cyclopedia. Unlike 1E it has coherent rules for things like initiative, and unlike 2E it doesn't get bogged down in splat. And you can say you're playing D&D, which you technically can't do with the retroclones. And it plays fast, and preps fast. And you can expand the game...

No 5e threads for now, please

This thread: Bogleheads :: View topic - No More Bailout or Credit Crises Threads ...reminded me of this thread. I think their elephant in the room dwarfs ours, though.
