    Monster & Treasure Assortment question. . .

That was really written for D&D, what we would now call OD&D. The assumption was that everything just does 1d6 damage; AL certainly has nothing to do with damage. There are a few exceptions, such as for giants and black pudding -- see Level 6, #67 where the variant damage is explicitly called...

When did I stop being WotC's target audience?

Missing the point. The conjecture is this: The people that took over around 2005 were fundamentally the ones in the category who stood up and said, "I don't like D&D, any of it, from 1975-2005". Per that conjecture, all of the sub-categories you mention are equally barred from the new game...

Forked Thread: Did 4e go far enough or to far?

I present this argument: The reason why some people enjoy the class/level part of D&D is because it marries distinct flavor/roles to distinctive playing mechanics. That is, different classes play differently (in mechanics) in a way supports the flavor. The wizard player is literally flipping...

Forked Thread: Did 4e go far enough or to far?

If the premise, as Wayne originally said, is "The biggest problem with D&D is that it's D&D," then I would say that they went *too far* in the direction of that premise, making D&D a different game than it used to be.

When did I stop being WotC's target audience?

This is not about what D&D is or is not. It's the difference between: (A) People who say "I like D&D (1975-2005)". (B) People who say "I do not like D&D (1975-2005)".

When did I stop being WotC's target audience?

I must say, a year or two ago my biggest fear was that "D&D is being taken over by people who fundamentally don't like D&D". Observations like this are pretty good confirmation of that.

When did I stop being WotC's target audience?

CPerkins has the closest thing to my analysis: (1) There was a great deal of continuity in the game from OD&D -> 1E -> 2E -> 3.0. (2) At the dawn of 3E, Dancey & Co. gave away use of the IP via the Open Game License, irrevocably. (3) Dancey left and management changed its mind about the OGL...

    Recent TPK... would you have?

Sometimes that just happens when you have a non-metagamey game. Personally, some of the most entertaining times for me and my players are when I describe something _really_ horrible and they practically start pounding the table and screaming "I run like hell!" and laughing in unison. 'Cuz they...

What is your favorite Wild West RPG?

Boot Hill. I pulled it out and ran it for my girlfriend a few weeks ago -- she really dug it and asked for more. Like most brand-new players I know, she likes the old stuff more than newer stuff -- tried 3E D&D, e.g., and it really turned her off.

    gimme back my narration

As you know, I don't play 20 questions with you anymore. Unless possibly you decide to address my full questions regarding that over here: http://www.enworld.org/forum/general-rpg-discussion/242512-challenge-players-not-characters-stats-5.html#post4501236

    Forked Thread: gimme some narration

I'd advise the OP to be cautious with that. Basically, he's fighting against his players' preferred playstyle. For those of us who dislike the chatty-"deep roleplay" stuff, written homework barring us from the game is an instant turnoff.

    gimme back my narration

No, those aren't alike. There's a big difference between: (A) There is a rule that has implications I don't want, and (B) There is no rule that has implications that I do want. Logically, !W(R) != W(!R). The former argues for cuts, exchanges or getting rid of certain things. The latter...

    I'm going to run a 1e game

Well, yeah, that's why weapon length is used for charging (first blow) and weapon speed factor is used on ties after that (once you've inside the long weapon length). For example, see Spanish short swords vs. Swiss pikes in the 1500's, CWC Oman, Art of War in the Middle Ages, p. 108-110...

    I'm going to run a 1e game

I must admit that I got very goods results using weapon speeds (& casting times) solely to break ties on initiative (and none of the other complications). Most of the time you'e not using it, but when it pops up it adds spice. http://deltasdnd.blogspot.com/2008/04/good-calls-for-ad.html

    making shields better?

Instead of more power-inflation, the other option is to power-down two-handed weapons. If you're using the 3.5 version of Power Attack (x2 for two-handed weapons), I would recommend ditching that (3.0 PA has no x2 rule).
