I just played my first Rules Cyclopedia based game

Seconded. And I do the same thing in 3E, too. (See link.)

Movie fight scenes - what level?

Times two? You could be in negative hp and still recoverable.

    That's a really interesting observation.

Yeah, P & T beat me to it, but I also have to jump in and recommend against the B1-9 collection. The editing decisions cut out some of the most interesting flavorful parts, IMO. The later modules are frankly not that good. B1-4 are must-haves. B1 "In Search of the Unknown" is a big dungeon...

Yeah, I'm certainly happy to do it just for spellcasters. (a) It's a sufficiently small amount of stuff to remember a few minutes later. (b) It gives the flavor that something dangerous is in the process of happening.

To all D&D fans - what are the top 3 specific changes 4e needs in your opinion

    (1) Stake through the heart (2) Holy wafers in the mouth (3) Exposed to the penetrating light and flame of the Sun

    What Level is a Guardsman?

See, one of the funny things is that if you look at Classic D&D (OD&D, 1E, BXCMI), a battle-hardened "veteran" is literally used as the definition for someone being a 1st-level Fighter. So at least in those rulesets you have to be radically redefining what levels even mean if you think bodies...

LOL. Wow, is that funny. :) My rules input: - I would say do not go for an "announce intent before initiative" rule. At this point I'm sold that that's one of the key "bad game design" mistakes. It massively slows down the game -- for immersion's sake, you want the action to occur immediately...

    I'm going to run a 1e game

I agree with Obryn's first suggestion. Divide by 7 in the example. Edit: Well, I take some of that back. Based on language in PHB p. 39 and DMG p. 85 I see technically the division happening before the halving for henchmen. However, I don't see any language about exactly what happens for...

    Stupidity or Genius?

You're forgetting that the incremental turns are trying to simulate a free-flowing series of actions. The PC isn't "waiting until his turn to fall over" -- for him, that's happening immediately after the Vrock hits him. So I would certainly allow it. And countering by introducing new "free...

    The Fall of Castle Zagyg?

What are you counting as "skill rolls" in original white-box D&D?

That's downright painful to read. Geez. :-S

What are bad ideas in RPGs?

I see the GM role as at least three-fold: (1) World & adventure design (off-line) (2) Adjudication of rules (at table) (3) Roleplaying villains/NPCs (at table) In role #3, the GM must indeed roleplay evil adversaries (hopefully motivating players to defeat them). To completely eliminate that I...

The Editions Need a Better Nomenclature

My picture: OD&D | | Holmes | | Mold AD&D line (1e) | | Mentz 2e | 3e To me, the keenest thing is Holmes collapsing race & class, which was nowhere in OD&D. (Even in original white books, elves had to track separate XP for...

The Editions Need a Better Nomenclature

I must admit, when I hear (or use) "Classic D&D", I think of everything pre-1987 -- OD&D, B/X, 1E AD&D -- that is, everything while Gygax was still with the company. The similarities in which were all stronger than between those and 3E, 4E, etc. To me, Holmes represents the bifurcation point...

    Character Wealth Confusion

It's funny, because IMO the system is more susceptible to players taking a whole lot of relatively cheap items (because of the square-cost principle) that then add up to a better total result (and also make a headache out of tracking all of them). One of my first house rules these days is to...

Not letting the players know how much experience they have

I wouldn't use it myself, but I salute the elegance of that system. Well played.
