    D&D 5E (2014) How do I one-shot?

Well, the "enemy team" idea was just an exampleI haven't worked out the general progression just yet, so I'll probably be able to better explain what I mean then, but my idea is to put in a series of subtle "fail-safes" I can use if something goes wrong and the players are lost for whatever...

D&D 5E (2014) Is Savage Attacker worth it?

It's basically "permanent advantage, but for damage rolls," so it's hard to imagine it being bad. Of course, advantage on d20 rolls is great because d20s are so big. So yeah, what they said. Go for big dice and it'll work out, probably.

D&D 5E (2014) Witch Bolt and Elemental Affinity

Here's one I just made up: Flashbolt Evocation cantrip Casting Time: 1 action Range: 50 feet Components: V, S Duration: Instantaneous A crackling arc of lightning streaks toward a creature within range. Make a ranged spell attack against the target. On a hit, the target takes 1d6 lightning...

    D&D 5E (2014) How do I one-shot?

I'm thinking I'll set the adventure up so I always have a way to speed any particular chapter to its conclusion if it takes too long. Like, have a team of enemies chasing them that will catch up and push the plot along if they dawdle. Does this sound like a good way to railroad without railroading?

D&D 5E (2014) Ideas for new homebrew Elemental Diciplines?

Oooh! Oooh! I did this! http://www.enworld.org/forum/5earchetypes/showentry.php?e=112&catid=1 It adds some wizard spells to the monk from the Elemental Evil Player's Companion, and four new Elemental Attunement disciplines (which in all honesty, shouldn't really count towards the discipline...

The 'Wonderland'-Inspired Faces of the RAGE OF DEMONS

I'm guessing it's just a coincidence. The dromes in the book were only spiders in the way they caught prey; they were described as pudgy white sponges on stubby legs. D&D was an influence on the author, though, especially his earlier stories about a hopeless wizzard (he can't spell) who...

The 'Wonderland'-Inspired Faces of the RAGE OF DEMONS

Actually, you just gave me an idea. Have you ever heard of the Tiffany Aching Discworld stories by Sir Terry Pratchett? There's a book where she basically enters the plane of elves and faeries, a horrible world where dreams come true. Haunting the land are creatures called "Dromes," these sort...

The 'Wonderland'-Inspired Faces of the RAGE OF DEMONS

Yeah, but make it really ambiguous whether this is all real or not. Oh, and if the characters previously played in another adventure, have several of the weird NPCs be suspiciously similar to NPCs from the surface world!

The 'Wonderland'-Inspired Faces of the RAGE OF DEMONS

And that just brings me back to my confusion over what LN actually means. If it creates misery, then in Mechanus LN is the "chump" alignment, for people who just do what they're told even if it makes them unhappy and doesn't appear to make anyone else happy except their leader. That means Primus...

    D&D 5E (2014) bards and instruments

Just always use a kazoo for a bardic instrument. Then you have both hands free!

    D&D 5E (2014) Thrills, chills, and amazement.

Yes, this! One thing the DM in the campaign journals I mentioned did was, when the players had spent all week preparing for this MASSIVE invasion of undead and abberations, start the combat several rounds before anything actually happened. To quote the player recounting the story:

D&D 5E (2014) We've had dragons, elementals, and demons - so what iconic evil is next?

It's been presented weirdly in the past, but 5e psionics would probably be easy to grasp as anything else in that edition (pretty simple)

The 'Wonderland'-Inspired Faces of the RAGE OF DEMONS

I always find Lawful Neutral a little hard to visualize. I mean, what does it say about the alignment that the creatures living on its plane of origin are souless automatons following rules you can't even explain? Lawful Good people want to give structure to the world so that things are more...

    D&D 5E (2014) How do I one-shot?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I'll do this in media res. That awkward part at the beginning where everyone's trying to find a reason to team up is kinda boring anyway.

    D&D 5E (2014) Thrills, chills, and amazement.

I point you to these campaign journals for inspiration: http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?116836-The-SilverClawShift-Campaign-Archives These are fantastically executed adventures run by a great DM who really knows what he's doing. It's 3.5e, but the dramatic tension can be applied...

    D&D 5E (2014) How do I one-shot?

OK, so I was just talking with her, and her group is actually more experienced than I realized. They're new to 5th edition, but they've played RPGs before and shouldn't need my help making characters. I sent her links to the UA articles I thought were cool. She said 4-5 hours sounded...

    D&D 5E (2014) How do I one-shot?

'K, sounds like good advice so far. I tend to be fairly laid-back when it comes to rule adjudication and deciding what players can do, so that shouldn't be an issue. I'm gonna message her for details about how we'll do character creation. Whatever happens, I'll tell you guys how it goes! I want...

    D&D 5E (2014) Darksun Weapons doubts

I dunno, pretty much every culture has worked out how to make a bow, regardless of the resources at hand. If there are wood swords, there can be wood bows.

D&D 5E (2014) Flight ability: Does this make the Aarakocra overpowered?

Also, for perspective: In forth edition, we had a standard race that could TELEPORT every five minutes. There are ways around every character's strengths.
