D&D 4E Thoughts on 4E from an "Outsider"...

My group just uses dice in place of minis and we use a grid map. Makes the game a lot easier as everyone visualizes the same thing (more so than just DM description anyway). Anyway... Grossout, the way in which you describe your glory days of 2e it does not sound like 4e will be right for you...

    Chaotic Neutral Copper Dragon?

Depends on the monster. Dragons I sometimes will shift one step on the law/chaos and/or good/evil axis. Demons, devils and other outsiders I've never changed, though I would be open to occaisonally having an exception to this (such as a fallen angel). Pretty much anything else I change around.

    Other Races as Core...?

Kobolds should be a core race!

    How soon will you switch?

If we switch it will be immediatley. The 'if' being after looking over the 4e PHB if we decide we like the new rules or not, if we do we'll switch.

    4 roles - why 5 players?

Hmm. I'd guess for two reasons. 1) D&D groups typically have 5 players (don't know if this is true or not). 2) There were 4 traditional roles, warrior, thief, mage, priest. While 4e changes these roles, I guess they want to stick at least somewhat with the old way.

DMG to include a "starter town".

My thoughts exactly. Saltmarsh was way overdone. Give me a brief overview, my group can fill in the details in game.

Is 4th edition getting soft? - edited for friendly content :)

This sums up my position. Save or die effects necessitate ressurection magic, which isn't something that should be in the game as a regular occurence available to many characters of sufficient level (every cleric level 9+ for instance).

    Design & Development: The Warlock

Hero doesn't necessarily equal good. Achilles, the quintessential hero, was one mean SOB. Probably CN or CE in D&D terms. From more modern stories we get Conan, who isn't a good guy either but is heroic.

    D&D 4E *** 4e Stats for Spined Devil ***

Ya, in Saga its 1/2 heroic level to damage rolls. Most monsters don't have levels in a heroic class.

    ability scores and modifiers

I hope so. I think changing ability scores in the way described by the OP would be a bad idea.

What are the prefered lab animals for fantasy?

I've always thought trolls would be good for this reason also. Sorta like Wolverine. Would explain why templated trolls pop up every now and again when I DM too.

insight bonus to AC- how do you get it?

Worm than Walks template from the epic level handbook gives a large insight bonus to AC if I recall. Unfortunately this would only help an NPC.

So, I bet that the d12 is getting kicked to the curb...

Down with the non-platonic dice! May their inferior shapes never cast a shadow on the grid map of a 4e game. d12 is the friend of great axe toting half orc barbarians everywhere, you don't want to anger them.

Age of the D&D Player Base

Wasn't there a poll done some time ago where people answered by birthdate? And wasn't there already an age poll done more recently anyway?

Warlocks or Psions. Which matters more to you?

Warlock. I prefer magic and demonic pacts to new aged crystal weirdo stuff. Yea, I know psionics can be flavored differently, but it generally has too much overlap with magic or has the wrong flavor (sorta like monks in pseudo medieval europe settings).

    Communism (& Socialism) in RPGs

I've had Spartan like societies in my games. I'd characterize Sparta as somewhat communist/socialist. Edit: Probably more fascist than anything else though.

"No save or die", but now "20 and TPK".

Unless the dragon's breath weapon/AoE attack has average damage equal to half the max HP of the party member with the highest HP (this seems unlikely) then a critical hit with it would not wipe out an entire party. I'd guess a dragon's breath weapon (on a succesful roll) typcially would wipe...

D&D 4E Simple Poll - How do you feel about 4E Right Now?

I'd like to see that too, but I doubt we'll see much of it till we get closer to the release date. So far we've heard ideas and intentions, I want hard numbers. I couldn't care either way about the fluff, seems D&D to me (but my group has never been much into plane hoping and always homebrews...

    Stealth Attack

From the srd on wands: To activate a wand, a character must hold it in hand (or whatever passes for a hand, for nonhumanoid creatures) and point it in the general direction of the target or area. A wand may be used while grappling or while swallowed whole. No somatic component, no verbal, just...
