Characters of War up at Wizards

Exactly. Unless the backgrounds are very carefully balanced it will unecessarily cause players to change their PC in non-mechanical ways for mechanical reasons. Didn't like them in 3e, don't like 'em 4e.

    Swordmage: Class creep too fast?

The sword mages at will powers seem better to me than either the fighters or the paladins. His mark seems comparable in power. And the encounter and daily powers seem on the same level as those of the fighter or paladin.

Apparently Wizards are perfectly balanced :)

Just because one group claims they're good and one claims they're weak does not mean they're balanced or on par in power with the other classes. I'm not sure what sort of logical fallacy that is but I know one when I see one.

3 simple rules for a no magic itens setting

Instead of 1 I think it'd keep it line with the book progression if you took a slightly different approach. +1 attacks, damage, defenses every 5 levels and +1d6 on critical hits every 5 levels.

Great weapon fighter is a "trap"? Forked Thread: I don't optimize.

The argument could be made that a great weapon fighter does the defender roll better by drawing more attacks because he does more damage and weaker defenses (though still good defenses and more HP/surges than most chars).

    Refluffing Cleave

Instead of changing the mechanics why not leave cleave the way it is? Just rename it? Sword and Board (Fighter, At will) Standard Action, Melee Weapon Target: One Creature Attack: Str vs AC Hit: 1[w]+str modifier damage. You strike a foe adjacent to your target with your shield dealing damage...

How do you calculate XP for evil NPCs?

The DMG also states you can use the PC creation rules for NPCs if you want, it just doesn't recommend and says to only use it for the recurring BBEG (or something along those lines). Which begs the question if you do so how much XP is this guy worth? He's better than a standard monster (at least...

    wizard in plate armor?

The only time I can imagine heavy armor being better for and away better for a wizard is once you have acess to the best masterwork armor (when you reach a +6 enhancement bonus). +4 Chain gives +13 AC. So at level 16 thats a 31 AC (scale would increase this by +1 and plate another +1) Level 16...

Forked Thread:Secondary Ability > Cleric and Wizard Controll

    1) Wizards are suppose to be better controllers than clerics 2) Wizards give up a lot to be good at that role, fewer HP, worse armor. 3) Wizards do not get better heal/buff/leader powers than clerics at any given level. And the statement at debate: 4) Clerics get better control spells than...

Is Fey Step really the best racial power?

I'm not sure its the best either. It's proably better than the half elfs power, the tieflings power, the human's extra at will and the dragon born's breath weapon. But the halfling, dwarf and elf powers all seem pretty good. Teleport does allow you to briefly ignore some conditions...

    Light Armor Users

I think in any case you will be fine through the heroic tier with your character. Consider at level 11 you get +1 to all stats. If you have a 12 con that'll give you a 13 allowing you to qualify for chainmail and scalemail. Your dexterity will proably be a 15, so qualifying for specialization...

    Combat takes too long

Many people have a long standing specieist attitude toward kobolds. They believe that other than clever traps and ambushes kobolds are nothing but weakling push overs and cowards. No more misrepresentative debasement of the noble kobold. To the OP- My group did its first combat heavy...

A number of (mostly unconnected) rules questions

7- Combat Challenge doesn't grant an OA, it grants a basic attack as an immediate interrupt against marked foes who shift or attack someone else. Therefore if they take a move action, instead of shifting, they provoke an OA, which the fighter gets a bonus to equal to his wisdom modifier, and if...

Judicious use and description of Minions [Edit-Now asking for stat analysis]

What if the minion is a Devil Legionarrie, a Angel of Valor or a Hobgoblin warrior? All of which are described as being well trained, well equiped opponents with good morale?

    Medium Armor type?

You could just say ring mail is the same statistically as hide or chainmail.

House rule: any class, any skill choice

While this may happen with some groups, this has not been my experience with the people I play with. In 3e we made all skills class skills to all classes. And with the exception of a lot of people putting 1 rank in tumble (a trained only skill) I didn't see characters only having the same...

Elven Ranger 2 weapon melee Stormwarden character - critique

Maybe your DM is using a lower point buy or perhaps you rolled ability scores, but in the event neither of those is the case, that is not a 22 pt buy. 16 9 pts 13 3 pts 12 2 pts 10 0 pts 12 2 pts 8 0 pts 16 pts only

    Insubstantial rules irk anyone else?

As for ghost and other insubstantial creatures; In 3e they could only be harmed by energy, spells and magic weapons. And those all had a 50% miss chance. In 4e they just give you half damage instead of the miss chance and nonmagical weapons can harm them. Not allowing mundane to harm them...

Do nonmagical 1/day abilities damage suspension of disbelief?

Yes, but its worth it. I remember the first time I heard someone complain about this. They were new to d&d and decided to play a monk, but couldn't stand that he could only use stunning fist x/day. Don't think I ever heard the same complaint made about rage. Now in 4e I don't mind the 1/day...

    Shields useless for non-fighters?

Exactly. No reason not to switch between the two as the situation warrants. Lots of mooks? Sword and board. One big bad monster who you're usings your 3[w] dailies on? Two hander.
