D&D 4E WotC_Rodney: 4ed "take only what you want" monster design good

I've always had the impression that monster design was going to remain forumla-ized, it's just that they are looking at them by role now. The monster roles being - brute, soldier, artillery, controller, lurker & skirmisher. And Rodney just seems to be describing how "Brutes" work in 4e - lots...

    D&D 4E How would you re-envision Greyhawk with 4e?

Roger Moore once commented that Greyhawk was an important planar nexus in the multiverse and that was a possible reason why Demon Lords were so interested in it. And it got me thinking about possible overarching themes that Tharizdun didn't necessarily have to have a heavy hand in. ;) The...

worlds and monsters is in my hands

    - The Elemental Chaos I find to be the most interesting change to the core cosmology. Elemental Evil written into the core books fills me with giddy glee. :) - The City of Brass gets mentioned... awesome. - Creating a wider range of elemental mosnters... even more awesomer. - Demon Lords...

    D&D 4E STR 'to-hit' bonus departing in 4e?

Strength to basic melee attack rolls isn't likely to change. However, we know that classes' various special attacks can be keyed to different abilities. Various Paladin's Smites for example use the PC's Charisma bonus to their attacks. We've been told that class abilities will be keyed to...

    D&D 4E How would you re-envision Greyhawk with 4e?

I think putting some significant distance between the current era and 4e in the long run will prove to be a good idea. It allows enough breathing room time for as big an upheaval the setting is going to need to spice up the setting and draw in new players again. It allows new cities and castles...

worlds and monsters is in my hands

Ah, okay - thanks. I've got that book and I think I remember the picture, I'll have to look them up again...

worlds and monsters is in my hands

I like a lot of what I'm hearing here. :) Dragons - I love the fact that they steering them away from the stat abominations they were in 3e (I remember starting a post about this very thing a couple of years back). It looks like they're putting the monster back into the dragon. It's...

worlds and monsters is in my hands

The Far Realm is by far my favorite planar addition to D&D - Bruce Cordell's "Gates of Firestorm Peak" is still on my all-time favorite adventures list. And I'm glad they kept it outside the rest of the cosmology and not try and fold it into the Abyss or some Astral Realm. It needs to keep it's...

    D&D 4E How would you re-envision Greyhawk with 4e?

Some evening musings... I was thinking more on a potential Far Realm Blight (“The Eye of the World”) after hearing more about it in the Monsters & Worlds 4e book and while I think Hepmonaland is not a bad idea, I think it might be a little too remote. There are whole swaths of land in the...

How much support are WotC's settings going to get?

IIRC the rights returned to WotC a while back.

How much support are WotC's settings going to get?

With the exception of 4.5e, I think that's not a bad guess. I don't see Dark Sun, Ravenloft or Planescape (even though it is one of my favorite settings) coming before these as they are more "niche" settings. Spelljammer I don't think will ever see the light of day again to be honest, neither...

    War Pick; ?d8

I also think it could very well as simple as Weapon Proficiency "Points" required to become proficient in the weapon. You spend 2 points to become proficient in that specific pick or X to become proficient in the entire "pick" group.

Mike Mearls on Combat vs Non-Combat roles

Yeah, I didn't really think that was really in contention as we've been told repeatedly that every class has it's own power source and that feats are open to all classes (so they have to be fairly general).

    D&D 4E How would you re-envision Greyhawk with 4e?

I think I could live with that... Actually, I hear this complaint more often than I'd like. I think it's essential to move the setting forward 100 years like the FR so you have that breathing room to make changes to the setting, just don't negate what has gone on before. You're going...

    D&D 4E How would you re-envision Greyhawk with 4e?

I was never all that keen on the new Circle either, they weren't bad insomuch as made more blah. Joining the Grey Lords however would be perfect as a Greyhawk-specific Epic Destiny.

    D&D 4E How would you re-envision Greyhawk with 4e?

Absolutely. You need to have the TPTB sit down with a small group of very hot artists and come up with the new Greyhawk "style" (fashion, city design, important NPCs, unique mosnters, marketable locales) distinct from the other settings (which is absolutely key), that others brought in would...

    Delay'd Launch or Errata

My biggest concern for 4e has always been the short amount time for external playtesting they're conducting. I don't expect a "small" amount of errata when it comes out (on time). I will be very, very (pleasantly) surprised if there isn't page after page after page... of errata and high level...

Will kobolds have 3x the hit points? or...

Yes, we've heard that 4 "Minion" monsters per PC make an appropriate challenge. But we've also heard that there are specific "Minion Rules" in combat which leads me to believe they'll have some ability to coordinate their efforts. I'm willing to bet that if multiple kobolds attack the same...

    D&D 4E How would you re-envision Greyhawk with 4e?

Just thought I'd throw out an idea for a new overarching "organization" before getting into the more grounded ones.... The Grey Lords / The Lords of Balance: One thing I liked from the old Gord the Rogue novels was the idea of a powerful group dedicated to the Balance that wasn’t just an...

    D&D 4E How would you re-envision Greyhawk with 4e?

Monsters: The Tarrasque has always been one of D&D’s most beloved uber-monsters. It is hinted that it's creation is linked to the Elemental Princes of Evil, which I always thought was interesting, and that opens the door for more of their... unique creations. :) The Great Beasts: During the...
