Holiday Present - The Elf PHB entry

Exactly. They have more avenues now to balance this against that... Also, we don't know what additional capability they might be giving to Cha in the game. We already know that different classes can apply different ability scores towards their special attacks.

Holiday Present - The Elf PHB entry

Yeah, we're getting a little more sense of what they were talking about when they said the low levels were getting a boost in power (fairly strong racial bonuses & 1st lvl. classes), but flatten out the power curve from there - if the weak-ish feat (by 3e standards) is anything to go by...

Holiday Present - The Elf PHB entry

Possibly, but as they are the "high" elves, I would expect Cha over Dex.

Holiday Present - The Elf PHB entry

Shift is all but certain to be the new 5' step and I'm sure I've heard somewhere already that elves were faster than humans already...

Holiday Present - The Elf PHB entry

I'm guessing the Eladrin then will have bonuses to Int & Cha.

Holiday Present - The Elf PHB entry

Looks good. Nothing there really shocking or surprising but looks to me like a good foundation.

Your preference for how "fragile" 1st-level character should be

Tougher, definitely. Fully healthy 1st level characters should be tough enough so that they're not just a single hit away from la-la land or one errant crit from death...

WotC_PeterS talks about his "aggresive playtest" (with Le Rouse, SKR, & Noonan)

I believe they said they have ~300 external testers right now in a recent interview.

    Races and Classes, Two-Weapon Fighting?

In a fantasy game it doesn't really matter. But IRL there are plenty of two weapon styles of fighting, particularly in asian marital arts (typically with smaller weapons though). Two sword fighting styles - Musashi-ryu (katana & wakizashi) and various chinese sword styles for example. But even...

    Triple HP at 1st level?

The new 4e rule of no confirmation crits kinda surprised me actually and I wonder if there isn't something we're missing (eg. your total score needs to be 5 more than the min. needed to hit or something for it to be a crit). The very reason they went with confirmation rolls in the first place...

    Triple HP at 1st level?

Well I can pretty much guarantee that they'll come out with "0th level" or some other kind of training level rules at some point. Personally I love the change, like many others I hate having to fudge dice at low levels so that fully healthy characters aren't wiped by errant crits or even just 2...

    Races and Classes, Two-Weapon Fighting?

My prediction is that there'll be fairly robust TWF support in 4e, it's far too popular a fighting style not to cover. I can't see how they'd miss the opportunity of including a whole chain of TWF maneuvers for the fighter.

The Tielfling and The Gnome: On the Set of 4th edition

We've heard in previous video interviews the designers calling them teef-lings, but it sounds silly to my ear so I still call them tief-lings. But any name with a -ling in it is going to sound a little silly anyway...

    Races and Classes, Two-Weapon Fighting?

Indeed, I can't really imagine TWF not being an option for fighters.

The Tielfling and The Gnome: On the Set of 4th edition

They gotta keep doing these. The tiefling toe-punting that badger off the tower was priceless. The only thing that could have improved it was it making a squeeky-toy noise as it bounced off the wall. And c'mon, the gnome was hilarious, they're gnomes. Gnomes! "Whose my minion?! Whose my...

WotC_PeterS talks about his "aggresive playtest" (with Le Rouse, SKR, & Noonan)

Oh, I agree that it's not as big a leap as last time. However you slice it though that's still ~9 classes, 300 monsters and 30 levels of play for external testers to cover in what appears to be a rather short amount of time to my eye. Even breaking groups down to specific segments, that's a lot...

WotC_PeterS talks about his "aggresive playtest" (with Le Rouse, SKR, & Noonan)

I'm not so sure because I assume you mean just internal playtesting. External playtesting for 4e didn't begin until just recently AFAIK. 3e was being externally tested before I ever joined in and as I mentioned earlier, had Alternity as a 3e "proving ground".

WotC_PeterS talks about his "aggresive playtest" (with Le Rouse, SKR, & Noonan)

And we had Alternity as the 3e beta of the underlying system. As far as the scope of the PT, IIRC there something like 300 players doing external PTing right now.

WotC_PeterS talks about his "aggresive playtest" (with Le Rouse, SKR, & Noonan)

Actually 3e had considerably more playtesting than 4th edition (my group PT'd for about 8 months IIRC) and was still nowhere near as much time I would have liked. In 3e though the game underwent significant changes over the playtest period and was a much more radical departure from the previous...

So what do you want to Run?

    1. Manageable high level play. I have a quite a number of high level/epic level campaign ideas that I've never really had the opportunity to explore. I've run a couple of games into epic levels and while plots were never an issue, the biggest complaint was that high level battles weren't the...
