    Business Discussion

From Hasbro's most recent 10-K: "The increase in gross profit in dollars was more than offset by increased product development and sales and marketing expenses related to investments the Company made in both core brands and its digital initiative related to its Wizards of the Coast...

    Death of D&D Miniatures

I think the reason for ending DDM was the market saturation. If you bought every set, you would have at least a thousand unique miniatures and people just didn't need as many. On top of that, almost all the common and uncommon monsters have already been done. IMO, at this point, there just...

I am beginning to appreciate some of the design decisions of 4E.

Ouch, this brings back some bad memories. I've also earned the "Time Well Wasted" achievement with a BBEG. That is why I went to almost entirely published material for 3e. It was worth it for the time saved.

3 reasons why the design team shouldn't visit ENWorld

Yes, and one of the persistent straw men in this thread is: "The guy said there is no value to forums." I think the real point was: "The guy cannot create well if he reads his forums." He makes a living off his creativity. If reading all the negative comments in his forum ruins his...

"New Design Math" for Monsters....which books exactly?

I tried applying the new math to Revenge of the Giants and I didn't see a whole lot of differences. It mostly comes down to the Elite and Solo monsters, am I right?

    VTT timeframe

Thanks for the synthesis and speculation. Sounds like a year would be the rough timeframe for full functionality.

    VTT timeframe

It has been a little while since the virtual tabletop (VTT) beta was announced for DDI. Does anyone know what the timeframe for VTT is? Months, a year, or years? I assume it will be out within a year, but the various reports indicate a lot of the functionality still isn't enabled.

I've managed to avoid Essentials, until now...

In my relatively (and low-level) experience, you won't even notice the difference. However, I would be upfront about your concerns and see how the player feels about letting you change your mind at a later date.

Maybe I don't understand the problem...

I would probably put the majority of problems on #6. Though I would probably rephrase it as "Communicate with your audience." <rant> Sometimes people (even friends) will act like jerks when they play. Occasionally, I play with people for which the game is competitive. At best, it diminishes...

    First-time DM--Where Do I Start???

Important caveats at bottom. For a plot based story arc, each adventures needs: background (mainly for DM) hook encounter (the players have to start somewhere) obstacle encounters (includes both fights, journeys, and skill challenges) resolution encounter (the last obstacle, usually a bad...

    Backstory - How Not To

This is so true and, to me, is the bare minimum for any type of roleplaying experience. It is also my personal maximum if the DM will let me get away with it.

    Backstory - How Not To

I don't like making a detailed history. I would much rather riff on whatever the DM puts in front of me. What usually complicates backstory development (for me) is that I don't know enough about the campaign world. I will say, 10 years ago I would have been more interested. But I don't have...

D&D 4E Advice: Running an Online 4e Game

I had a problem with autoloading monster powers. Wading through the MapTools forums has been a hassle to actually figure out how to fix it. At this point, I just made a macro for rolling each dice individually and do all and powers myself. Probably a fix exists but the open source aspect has...

Poll: Allignment effect on intended game play actions

I do use alignment to double check my actions. Sometimes my first idea is what I want to do and not so much what the character would have done. For example, I like lots of activity and will do chaotic things when things get slow. Obviously, that wouldn't apply to a more orderly-minded character.

    Eberron

Two hallmarks of Eberron make a DMs life a little different from FR. First, traditional monster/NPC alignments can differ and so the DM has to fight assumptions about a monster/NPC. Second, it is difficult to stay true to the pulp feel the world is intended to have. Neither may be a problem...

WoW Cataclysm VS 4e Forgotten Realms

That would have been very cool. I like the idea of the Spellplague myself, and the vagueness of it all is really too much. To counter my own agreement, however, in Eberron, lots of areas are light on detail and it doesn't seem to be a big problem for most people.

WoW Cataclysm VS 4e Forgotten Realms

Respectfully, I think this is mostly wrong. I can't even imagine what a FR would look like if it were designed by committee. Maybe would have a lot of drow rangers! The design goals appear to have been: 1) Make the material accessible to someone who knows nothing about the Realms. (Ex: A large...

    Politics and the LGS

Something I disagree with would discourage me from regularly visiting. Something I agree with would not encourage me to regularly visit. I suspect most people are the same. Hence, no retailer should ever publicize political views. ****** All that said, I will also keep away from stores...

WoW Cataclysm VS 4e Forgotten Realms

My impression was that WotC wanted the Spellplague to be a relatively vague event so that DMs could attach whatever plot hooks they wanted to it. As a working theory, I think the appeal of FR has always been that players and DMs felt like they were playing in a fantasy novel. Like a novel...
