D&D 4E Played Dark Sun 4E Last Night

What races/classes were you guys playing? Did everybody feel the same way?

D&D 4E Which of the Wizards 4e H-E adventure have you played or run?

H3 was a crazy slog. It was the worst published module I ever played. I am looking at running Revenge of the Giants and decided I will cut about 1/3 of the combat encounters--it is just too much!

Are you in the RPG closet?

I hide it for the most part. I don't really think anybody would think worse of me of it, but I really don't want to deal with people's misconceptions. My friends and I have seen two major misconceptions. D&D was cult-related and that D&D was LARPing. It's not worth the hassle to disabuse them of...

    Essentials: which new players?

I remember reading about current players wanting an affordable gift to give to people they thought would be interested. Anecdotally, the designer interviews almost always mention that "somebody" gave them the red box as a kid and they fell in love with it. I certainly like the idea of an...

    D&D 5E (2014) Essentials: More like 3.9e than 4.5e (link inside)

It seemed to me that choosing powers currently allows a player some control over the complexity of their character. I can certainly remember trying to decide between a power that was straightforward and one that was complex. By straightforward, I mean you can use it most anytime and its effects...

    D&D 5E (2014) Essentials: More like 3.9e than 4.5e (link inside)

Reading the cleric article has made me definitely more interested in Essentials. I particularly like that one can choose to have a class without dailies but with more interesting encounters. I also see these options as bringing a lot of potential flavor into the game. I never liked specialty...

    Vote for your Forgotten Realms!

I would say the 100ish year jump is the most difficult part to get around. If the question was "you're the brand manager, how would you have done the 4e launch?", I would probably keep the Realms Shaking Event but only jump it 10 years. Keeps favorite NPCs around or at least relevant, but gives...

I stink at winging it- HELP!

The easiest solution for winging it for me is typically a roleplaying encounter. After that, a skill challenge would be good, particularly if the players are creative with their skills. I would avoid combat encounters unless the tangent the players want is definitely combat oriented. (Coming...

Help polishing an adventure pitch to Dungeon

Precursor: I know nothing about fiction writing standards. Balsamic Dragon's advice sounds pretty typical. Professional writers and editors all seem to care a lot about grammar and spelling. Every commentary or publication guide I have seen spends a significant amount of time encouraging proper...

    rumored leveraged buyout of Hasbro

Reads to me like it won't happen, though I would be interested to know what stock price they were offering. Wells Fargo was estimating 48-52 which would be around a 10% premium. Not bad, but with Hasbro's recent meteoric rise in sales, growing dividend, and 2% dividend yield, I suspect it would...

companies staying away from rpg gamers

I propose a test of the jerkiness level of gamers online vs. other hobbyists. I think a comparison of admin actions on this forum compared to other non-gaming forums would provide a fruitful comparison. Are people banned more frequently here? Are threads locked more often here because of jerky...

I need a city - looking for product recommendations

Shackled City (from the Shackled City Adventure Path in Dungeon) might fit the bill. It is set in the middle of a dead volcano and there is mining in the area. If you are looking for LE, you might want to skip ahead to about the 5th-7th adventures when things start to go bad in the city. (Sorry...

Open Letter To Local Game Stores

I can put up with just about anything but bad employees. I regard this as the number 1 problem from the Open Letter above. Bad customer service probably has driven away more fans from the hobby than anything else. My ego does not require me to be treated with an undue amount of respect--however...

Taxing the Players - making it work in game.

VAT ftw? Certainly would be easier if everything in the town was just 10% more expensive and it addresses the problem of PCs not self-reporting.

    Facing: Cool or Lame?

I could see interesting mechanics that result from the application of a facing rule in an RPG. Powers that depend on facing, conditional combat advantage, etc. However, that seems like it would be more for a highly tactical game, not necessarily your traditional RPG.

It feels to me like Hasbro has lit a fire under Wizards of the Coast, and given them

Noted, and you are right. But I've been trying to forget M:TG on purpose :)
