From today's Rule of Three column:
Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game Official Home Page - Article (Rule-of-Three: 07/18/2011)
The new management line-up is:
Mike Mearls, Senior Manager (Picard*)
Rich Baker, RPG Group Manager (Riker to Mearls's Picard?)
Rodney Thompson, Tabletop Manager...
Seriously check out theartorder.com then (a few pictures feature dryads/nymphs/etc that may be NSFW). Jon Schindehette's, the D&D art director, talks a lot about different art styles and really gives some insight into how he chooses art and artists.
I didn't realize that the main R&D guys were working on the Encounters season (having not played Encounters). That might explain some of the productivity drop...
I noticed it, too. The Daggerdale Art was particularly good and (even if you didn't like the style) useful. I'm glad to see it. The WotC Art Director has an interesting blog/community website at http://theartorder.com/ . The Lord of the Rings contest he did awhile back produced some awesome art...
I'll put in another plug for Dungeon Delve. Even if you drop the modest plot lines, they provide fairly interesting tactics.
I will repeat that H3 has fantastic encounters (considering how bad the adventure is).
Other reasons in favor of DDI:
1) Most of my characters have at least one feat or power from Dragon. Generally, they are good.
2) The cost is about that of two books. In exchange, you get the crunch from all the books plus all the Dragon crunch.
3) You get the full backlog of Dragon content...
I like characters where I don't have to make a decision between a cool choice and a good choice. I want all the choices to be both cool and good. That is why I value balance.
The whole debate between basic and advanced comes down to the issue of balance. Can the basic character play in the...
So, combine Question 1 with today's "Legends & Lore" (Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game Official Home Page - Article (Head of the Class)) and it all fits very nicely.
Basic and Advanced.
Except, they leave the door open for Advanced 1 (AEDU) and Advanced 2 (Psionics style powers) and...
I thought there was plenty of space to make it non-linear if you wanted, too. Of course, it was a wilderness adventure, so I would like to see the same format on a dungeon adventure before I judge it a total success.
Sounds like you are more than willing to convert. Are you really just looking for cool encounter ideas or do you want full-blown adventures?
Cool encounter ideas are everywhere. H3 (Pyramid of Something) was a terrible adventure IMO but had a lot of interesting encounters that would be worth...
Heck, a random encounter tool would be awesome. Have terrain, level range, rarity, XP budget, etc., then it generates random encounters. Basically, it could just be the suggested encounter groups like in MM 1.
I thought they made the point that the philosophy lets them cater to more than one playstyle. Now, they may not have addressed your playstyle yet, but they recognize that not everybody has the same style.
I really like that they posted sample submissions. That will probably more helpful then...
Regarding the maps, I don't like the monster locations either, but I use GIMP to edit them out for use with MapTools. It ain't perfect, but the players don't really notice and it is better than hand drawing :-/
I wonder if the monster locations are a rough copyright protection? If they didn't...
I was ninja'd! But here is my response.
1. They still indicate monster starting paces. (I'll have a follow up point in the next post.) No repeat of the maps, though.
2. Not completely linear. Depending on actions, one "Event" may be skipped and there is a section describing various things...
Sustainability is an important point in all of this. The double peak that Umbran discusses hits right on this problem. How much does DDI improve sustainability?
As someone who rarely buys D&D material, I'll keep a DDI account for the foreseeable future. Roughly speaking, DDI costs the...
Does you have to have a pre-made adventure or are you just wanting ideas in general?
If you don't mind converting, there is a short epic adventure at the back of the 3e Epic Level Handbook.
If you are just wanting ideas, the buried primordial on Frost Spire (in RotG) would be an interesting...
This discussion about Neverwinter being good/bad would have better context with a firm announcement about next year's setting. I know Ravenloft was tossed around, but has there been any real news? Don't they usually announce it at/around GenCon?
This sounds really good. Consider most of this stolen. ;)
I really like the idea of Brevan sneaking in and trying to get the Frost Spire piece while they battle with the boss. It adds more urgency. Kaseem will give them his piece conditional on removing the frost giant menace to Flotsam...
