The End of the World as We Know it?

If you apply the model of other online magazines (like Slate), DDI seems to hit pretty close to that. Slate typically has X number of new articles everyday and a section to discuss topics. DDI now has 2-4 articles everyday (albeit some just art compilations) and a section to discuss topics...

Revenge of the Giants plot question

While most of the positives/negatives of Revenge of the Giants were thoroughly hashed out here: http://www.enworld.org/forum/general-rpg-discussion/272045-d-d-4th-edition-against-giants-vs-revenge-giants.html I am a little bit stumped about something. MILD SPOILERS BELOW My PCs have...

Mike Mearls, I am calling you out! (Legends & Lore 6/28)

I have a photo on my desk of Kamikazee Midget and Mike Mearls and KM has started to fade from sight! GREAT SCOTT! The only solution is to go... BACK TO THE FUTURE!!

    Advice for Boosting a FLGS

Is he trying to tap into gaming demand that is already there? Probably add LFR and maybe some miniature painting workshops. Is he trying to create demand? Much harder. Maybe get some workshops on how to play RPGs or M:TG at the local library. And, while this may be stupid, he may want to...

Thank Goodness: Moving away from the Delve format

I am cautious optimistic. I don't really understand what he means about the "think black line" and will and won't be included. When running an encounter, the delve format is so awesome. But, I have a hard time understanding what the adventure is about. I'm currently DMing Revenge of the Giants...

    Removed

Me too. I'm very grateful for what we have ... but it doesn't seem like enough to keep an active readership. It has averaged barely one update a week for 2011. There aren't even advertisements on the site, and I can't see it making much money solely on (rather limited) merchandise. Not many...

AMpersand #400 Bill S leaving WotC (and others?)

So sorry to hear about the layoffs, but I hope some video game company will be gaining some talented people. I've never understood who actually makes these decisions. It certainly isn't Hasbro directly (no matter how often that gets repeated on Enworld).

Home Game Culture Shock: LFR players vs the 15min workday

I like the "1 healing surge, 1 encounter recharge" compromise for this chase scene. My experience suggests managing players expectations for these types of rules. New groups don't necessarily all assume the same rigor of rules applications and I tend to be very explicit for the first few...

Dragon 400: Nerathi Legends: The Iron Wolf Barbarians

I noticed the map was similar to the one from the Conquests of Nerath strategy board game. So, is that going to be the canon map for the PoL setting?

    It's the little things

I add street people. Bums asking for money, hawkers, farmers asking directions, drunks, children, etc. It took a little getting used to at first, as the players thought these interactions were "important." But they aren't, they just exist to suggest a bustling city, sleepy hamlet, or where ever.

    Being non-judgmental about play styles

How about this: when I play with a group of new people, I don't tell them I read the Character Optimization boards because I'm concerned I'll get judged for it. Of course, I don't feel I'm a powergamer. I like reading the boards when choosing powers so I can get an idea about the pros and cons...

have you ever played without maps?

Wait... geography maps showing cities, mountains, forests, etc., or dungeon maps with squares, hexes, etc? I've played without, but it was for narrative focused rpgs. D&D is almost always with some sort of map.

CB's biggest failing by far: No custom content possible

I sympathise with the frustration of not having this customizability that seems simple to add. Cannot they just add a box to check for every possible choice that says "Customized" and just leaves the feat/language/power open to be filled in by the user? Even if it is with a pencil after you...

    So, What's the Controller's 'Thing'?

I like the blaster idea. I would probably give the following power: 1/turn: Attack one enemy for X damage, or two enemies at a -2 penalty for Y damage. If you wanted the true controller power: 1/turn: Attack one enemy for Z damage. If it hits, the target is slowed (save ends). You could...

What is the 15-minute adventuring day?

If it were 4e, a party might use all their dailies in one encounter and then want to rest to regain their daily powers for use in the next encounter. That would make the module significantly easier. The rule probably means that if the party chooses to rest to renew their resources, they will be...

Review of Dungeons & Dragons: Daggerdale by Atari

While much of the review is true, I have to say it misses an important point. It is a $15 game. For $15, I have been enjoying it enough in single player to not regret buying it. I certainly wouldn't gush over it, and I wouldn't recommend it to someone out of the blue (like I would recommend the...

Chris Perkins teasers from Comicpalooza in Houston

Thematic in many ways, but it did have three separate giant steddings in which to adventure. I think it may have more in common with the 2E "Against the Giants" silver edition book which had the converted adventures plus a bunch of extra locations around Geoff. I think I'm more excited about...

Why do you subscribe to DDI?

It is wholly, entirely about the Character Builder. I've never bought a lot of books because I never used most of the content. With DDI, I get all the content (with errata) at the price of about 2 books a year. Definitely worth it for that alone from my point of view. A few other things make...

    Fighting in shallow water

I would just declare it to be some sort of scenario and let your players know what all the restrictions are. In other words, exception based design :) I really like that range attacks would get penalties.

    Monster Vault: Mages of Saruun

I see this pair being an interesting combo. I might have added some joint powers, letting the mage repair the construct in combat. And I always feel like mages need a "Let Go of Me" power to force PCs away or let them escape being surrounded. Maybe give the construct the power to move an ally...
