    Even chunks of TSR Design took hard lefts when allowed. Amazing Engine, the Dragonlance and Marvel card-based games, even the second Buck Rogers (High Adventure one) RPG was closer to Forgotten Futures than Forgotten Realms.

    I am dubious of calling a handful of years "a long time". All of the early games I can think of that "don't play like D&D" in my mind are in '77 or '78. There are likely earlier examples.

    The best ones I've ever had were honeydusted and SOMEHOW they had perfected getting the inside cooked, without it gettinghard while managing a crispy surface. Up until then, I was convinced they just couldn't be good.

    It's absolutely this. I'm the sole member of the household that isn't fond of Raisin Canes ( I don't actively dislike them - I never crave it... ) but everyone that does is either still in the "everything is too spicey" age or loves the sauce. It's not a bad sauce.
