Random Encounter Generator UPDATED June 12th

Oh, this is useful. Thanks for putting it together!

    D&D 4E Point buy, 4e & you.

I'm sure the weighting of high stats in point buy is to make it balanced against random rolling (which I always use anyhow.)

    D&D 4E Everyone's a swordsage; Thoughts on 4E after my first read-through.

I agree with you on this, anyway. D&D without rolling randomly for certain things seems very wrong to me. We have been rolling ability scores just like always. Point buy? Yuck... boring. Never even tried it. I do like the new way of handling skills though. The character's level of skill in...

    No Love for the Cleric?

I don't dislike the Cleric, just Clerics in general. :) The 4E one seems pretty good, though.

Why don't clerics get Shield proficiency?

I can't remember ever seeing someone play a cleric without a shield.

    More feats, fewer choices

Feats have always placed constraints. By forcing players to choose which things they can do, you limit anyone without the feat from trying it. 3E introduced this concept to D&D, not 4E. With regards to 4E though, when I make a character the feats seem almost pointless now. The powers are...

Making a high-level PC is hard!

I'd suggest not writing everything down every time you make a character. Make a set of copies for the powers on cardstock or something, then cut them apart and you have instant power cards which can be reused for different characters.

    D&D 4E 4e, Non-Martial Characters, and Limited Feat Choices

I noticed it, and with a martial character, too. It all depends on your concept/build. I don't think it's a serious problem yet though, it's just a limitation. No doubt that will be "fixed" very soon, and we will have more feats than we even know what to do with.

    Is Forced Movement Inherently Breakable?

Let's not forget there is (presumably) a DM involved in these examples, who can judge the situation at hand and make a ruling as to how possible they are given particular game world environment considerations. That used to be the DMs job, but to read these discussions it seems the rules are now...

    Wizard and spellbooks

I think some of you actually want to make these rules appear complicated. Regarding spells, there is only one possible reading of the rules that I can see. Don't add in concepts from other editions, just read what's on the page.

What does an acrobatic stunt do?

I agree with your desire for more examples, but for the first time ever, IMO, we have a completely rock-solid and gameplay-oriented ruleset to build on in the future. Those other things will come sooner rather than later (from WotC, third parties, and players themselves), and they will all work...

What does an acrobatic stunt do?

I can imagine a PC doing acrobatic feats that would impact a battle and have mechanical effect (cause damage, etc.) But I can't imagine rules that would cover such things. It's a wide-open area, imagination-wise. This is why the game has a DM.

    Paper Minions - WT?

All I can say is minions work in play. I loved the way they worked in the game we ran. They let the DM make battles interesting, in terms of amount of enemies, and by the time PCs can actually hit high-level minions it will be believable for them to die in one hit. Look past the one hit point...

    Swimming in plate armor??

Do those who demand realistic armor also have PC shields destroyed as they absorb hits, make them unstring their bows when they carry them around, etc? Just curious where you draw the line on this stuff.

    D&D 4E Inside 4e D&D

    I've been missing D&D for about a decade. Long live 4E! :)

    Trip? Disarm? Sunder? Gone forever?

As the DM I guess I'd make up a mechanic on the spot and let them try it. Novel idea, huh? ;)

    Rogues and Two Weapon Fighting

Honestly though, that is pure description and flavor. It's easy to make a Ranger a dungeoneering guy, not a wilderness guy. Nobody forces you to pick nature as a skill. First thing I noticed when making my ranger was that I could make him an effective dungeon explorer if I wanted, and ignore...

    Rogues and Two Weapon Fighting

Want to do non-Ranger two-weapon fighting? Ask your friendly DM if you can swap out something from your class to gain access to it. It's just a game, and alterations can be made for the sake of making people happy and having a good time. As long as there's not a Ranger in your group who feels...

Monster Manual: I miss the fluff.

Maybe their game designers don't have delusions of being fantasy novelists anymore? Really, it's like being a captive audience for bad fan fiction when a rulebook does what you suggest.

Monster Manual: I miss the fluff.

Fluff makes game statistics reference manuals hard to use. Good riddance to the excessive fluff. Besides, it's still in the game... 4E has a lot of nice descriptions of how things fit into the world, what PCs might know about the monsters, etc. But it is in it's own place, not mixed in with...
